How do children and young people use the Internet? At what age do they start browsing? What type of risks are they exposed to? Research led by the UPV/EHU has analysed the way in which Spanish children between the ages of 9 and 16 use the Internet. The conclusions of this report show, for example, that children start accessing the network at the average age of 7, that 12% of those surveyed have suffered some kind of harassment through the Internet or mobile phone and that 63% of them have a smartphone.
Maialen Garmendia, professor and researcher at the UPV/EHU is one of the authors of the report and will explain the general lines of the research in the talk and discussion: “Early users? Browsing the Internet from the age of 7”. The talk will take place on 7 February at Azkuna Zentroa in Bilbao. It will be in Basque and is part of the Zientziateka programme.
Zientziateka is a bimonthly initiative organised by the Chair of Scientific Culture of the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU and Azkuna Zentroa to raise awareness of current scientific matters.
Tickets should be collected from the Azkuna Zentroa Information Point. Entry is free.
