Has human activity had such an impact on the Earth that it can be considered to have led to the dawn of a new geological period? In recent years, the term Anthropocene has been proposed to call this new period in the history of our planet and its inclusion in the geological time scale is being studied. There are three proposals to determine when it began: the Neolithic revolution thousands of years ago; the industrial revolution in the 18th century and finally, the scientific-economic development and the nuclear escalation that took place in the middle of the 20th century.

Alejandro Cearreta, Professor of Stratigraphy and Palaeontology at the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU, will explain the details of this period in the earth’s history in a talk entitled ‘The Anthropocene: Are we in a new geological time? This conference will take place on 14 April at 7 pm at Azkuna Zentroa and it will be in Spanish.

Zientziateka is a monthly initiative organised by the Chair of Scientific Culture of the UPV/EHU and Azkuna Zentroa to raise awareness of current scientific matters.

Tickets should be collected from the Azkuna Zentroa Information Point. Free entry will be subject to available seating.
