Antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest threats to global health in the next few years, according to the World Health Organization. Bacteria suffer genetic mutations which make them resistant to antibiotics, and this leaves us powerless in the battle against them. It is becoming increasingly difficult to treat pneumonia and tuberculosis, for example. New antibiotics are being researched constantly, but this won’t be enough. Scientists are looking for new strategies to face the threat of multi-resistant bacteria.
Itziar Alkorta, Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the UPV/EHU, will be talking about these new strategies at a talk called “New Strategies to Combat ‘Superbugs’”. The talk will be in Basque and will take place on 7 March at the Azkuna Zentroa in Bilbao.
This event is part of Zientziateka, a monthly series of conferences organised by the Chair of Scientific Culture of the University of the Basque Country and Azkuna Zentroa to raise awareness of current scientific matters.
Tickets should be collected from the Azkuna Zentroa Information Point. Access is free.
