Mutations occurring in the proteins of our bodies may cause cancer and other illnesses. A group of geneticists and engineers at UPV/EHU have created special computer software capable of analysing 40,000 proteins per minute, as well as the mutations that can be generated in those proteins. The software is therefore capable of managing an enormous amount of information in very little time. This type of bioinformatic application is of growing importance for research in the fight against cancer and providing data on the disease.

Asier Fullaondo, professor of genetics at UPV/EHU, is part of the group that developed this software and he will explain its use to us in the talk entitled, “New software for analysing cancer mutations”. The talk will take place on 6 June at Azkuna Zentroa in Bilbao. It will be in Basque and is part of the Zientziateka programme.

Zientziateka is a bimonthly initiative organised by the Chair of Scientific Culture of the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU and Azkuna Zentroa to raise awareness of current scientific matters.

Tickets should be collected from the Azkuna Zentroa Information Point. Entry is free.
