SUMMARY:Genetic doping: Designing gold medals in the lab
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIs it possible to manipulate athletes’ genomes to improve their performance? What are the consequences? How is it carried out? The World Anti-Doping Agency has confirmed that genetic doping already exists and has become the greatest threat to sport. The first tests to detect this type of doping took place at the Rio 2016 Olympics. The effects of this doping on athletes’ health are still unknown. \n\n\n\nBiotechnologist and researcher in the field of genetic doping Julen Díaz will cover these issues at the talk & discussion entitled “Genetic doping: Designing gold medals in the lab”. Julen is currently working on the development of a method to detect this type of doping. The event will take place on 4th October in Azkuna Zentroa\, and the lecture will be in Basque. \n\n\n\nZientziateka is a monthly initiative organised by the Chair of Scientific Culture of the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU and Azkuna Zentroa to raise awareness of current scientific matters. \n\n\n\nTickets should be collected from the Azkuna Zentroa Information Point. Entry is free.

SUMMARY:Leonardo Torres Quevedo\, universal engineer. The most prodigious inventor of his time
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn 24th October\, the ‘Leonardo Torres Quevedo\, universal engineer. The most prodigious inventor of his time’ talk will be held at the UPV/EHU Bizkaia Aretoa (Abandoibarra 3\, Bilbao). This conference by the professor at the Complutense University in Madrid\, Francisco A. González Redondo\, will be the opening ceremony of an exhibition on the Basque engineer which will be on display at the same centre from 24th October to 6th November. \n\n\n\nIn 1930\, Leonardo Torres Quevedo (1852-1939) was named the most prodigious inventor of his time and takes an important place in the universal history of science and technology. Among his inventions\, the first remote control or telekino (1902) can be highlighted\, capable of controlling a dirigible; the Mount Ulía cable car in San Sebastian (1907)\, considered to be the world’s first passenger cable car; or the electromechanical arithmometer (1920)\, a predecessor to computers which was several decades ahead of the 20th century IT pioneers. \n\n\n\nAn expert in the illustrious inventor\, Francisco A. González Redondo has written a biography on Leonardo Torres Quevedo and numerous articles\, as well as organising conferences and exhibitions on the famous engineer. \n\n\n\nGonzález Redondo’s talk will provide a broader vision of the exhibition and will serve to raise awareness of the work of the engineer and mathematician. \n\n\n\nThe talk will be in Spanish on 24th October at 7pm in the Sala Baroja at the UPV/EHU Bizkaia Aretoa (2nd Floor). Free entry subject to available seating. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition will be held from 24th October to 6th November in the Sala Axular (1st Floor). It will display explanatory panels\, personal belongings of Torres Quevedo and the model of a cable car made by him. \n\n\n\nBoth activities are organised by the UPV/EHU Chair of Scientific Culture and form part of the Zientzia astea programme.

SUMMARY:Does social inequality kill in the Basque Country? Yes it does\, and there are figures to prove it
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDoes the socioeconomic status of a place affect the health of the people living there? For many years it has been thought that people in the Basque Country are healthier than those living in other regions in Spain. Research carried out recently concluded that there are also significant differences within our region. The study also proves that the mortality rate in the Basque Country varies substantially from one place to another\, and it is affected amongst other reasons by the socioeconomic status of each area. \n\n\n\nImanol Montoya Arroniz\, Doctor of Statistics from the UPV/EHU\, will cover these issues at a talk & discussion entitled “Does social inequality kill in the Basque Country? Yes it does\, and there are figures to prove it”. The conference will take place on 26 October at Azkuna Zentroa. This conference\, which is part of the Zientziateka programme\, will be in Spanish. Access is free.
