DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLanguage: Spanish \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGiza adimenak egiten dituen eragiketekin (ikaskuntza edo arrazoiketa logikoa\, esaterako) konparagarriak diren eragiketak egiten dituzten programa informatikoak sortzeaz arduratuko den diziplina zientifikoa litzateke Adimen Artifiziala (IA). IAk gizakiok eta beste animalia-espezie batzuek ditugun gaitasun kongnitiboak errepikatzen ditu makinak erabiliz\, eta\, dagoeneko\, presente dago gure eguneroko bizitzan. Siri edo Alexa bezalako laguntzaileak\, itzultzaile automatikoak\, auto autonomoak\, GPSa edo romba bezalako garbiketa-robotak dira horren adibide. Baina nola funtzionatzen du? Adimen artifiziala benetan argia al da? Zein da bere etorkizuna? Gorka Azkune Informatikan doktoreak erantzungo die galdera horiei. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nHizlaria\n\n\n\nGorka Azkune EHUko HiTZ Hizkuntza Teknologiako Zentroan ikertzaile bezala aritzen da (hitz.eus)\, Gizaki-Ordenagailu Elkarrekintza arloko ikertzaile nagusia delarik. Irakasle agregatua da baita ere Informatika Fakultatean (EHU)\, bertan eskaintzen diren gradu zein masterretan parte hartuz. Informatikan Ingeniaria da formazioz eta doktoretza egin zuen adimen artifiziala eta ikaskuntza automatikoaren arloan. Gaur egun\, 30 artikulu zientifikotik gora ditu argitaratuak nazioarteko aldizkari eta kongresuetan. Bere ikerketa lerroak ikaskuntza sakon multimodala (ikusmena eta testua uztartuz) eta elkarrizketa sistemak dira batez ere. Zientzia dibulgazioan ere ibili izan da Gorka\, hainbat CAF-Elhuyar sari irabazi dituelarik. Irratia\, telebista edo prentsarekin ere hainbat aldiz kolaboratu du adimen artifiziala eta hizkuntza teknologiak gizarteratzeko lanean.

SUMMARY:Ilustrando la evolución humana
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLa brecha de género tiene su reflejo en el ámbito científico.

SUMMARY:New software for analysing cancer mutations
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMutations occurring in the proteins of our bodies may cause cancer and other illnesses. A group of geneticists and engineers at UPV/EHU have created special computer software capable of analysing 40\,000 proteins per minute\, as well as the mutations that can be generated in those proteins. The software is therefore capable of managing an enormous amount of information in very little time. This type of bioinformatic application is of growing importance for research in the fight against cancer and providing data on the disease. \n\n\n\nAsier Fullaondo\, professor of genetics at UPV/EHU\, is part of the group that developed this software and he will explain its use to us in the talk entitled\, “New software for analysing cancer mutations”. The talk will take place on 6 June at Azkuna Zentroa in Bilbao. It will be in Basque and is part of the Zientziateka programme. \n\n\n\nZientziateka is a bimonthly initiative organised by the Chair of Scientific Culture of the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU and Azkuna Zentroa to raise awareness of current scientific matters. \n\n\n\nTickets should be collected from the Azkuna Zentroa Information Point. Entry is free.

SUMMARY:Science and art on street level
DESCRIPTION:Details \n\n\n\n\nDate and time: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThere are works of art that fascinate some\, and frighten others. There are some that go unnoticed\, and there are others that provoke anger\, or on the contrary\, bring about good sensations or even excitement. The same goes for spaces. There are places where it’s nice to be\, and there are places we feel we’re being kicked out. \n\n\n\nThe organisation of space undoubtedly affects us\, and our home\, our neighbourhood and our cities in some way determine the person we are today. But how does our perception respond when it comes to these spaces? What determines whether we like a work of art or a space? \n\n\n\nThe cycle of conferences – “Science and art on street level” will address this and other related issues with six experts from six different areas of expertise. Art and science will be intertwined in this cycle of conferences on 19 and 27 June\, which will take place at the Bidebarrieta Library in Bilbao. \n\n\n\nThis event is part of the “Scientific Bidebarrieta” series\, a monthly initiative organised by the Chair of Scientific Culture of the UPV/EHU and Bidebarrieta Library with the aim of promoting and disseminating scientific knowledge. \n\n\n\nThe cycle of conferences “Science and art on street level” will be inaugurated on 19 June at 7pm with a first multidisciplinary day that will analyse the relationship between art\, neurobiology and psychology\, with the participation of the neurobiologist Conchi Lillo\, the psychologist Patri Tezanos and the art critic Elena Vozmediano. \n\n\n\nThe second and final day of the cycle will be held on 27 June at 7pm\, with the participation of the architect Santiago de Molina\, the artist Christian García Bello and the structural concrete professor\, Manuel F. Herrador. The three speakers will discuss how engineering and architecture influence our perception of our everyday spaces. \n\n\n\nAll the talks that will be held in the cycle will be free of charge\, subject to seating capacity. However\, in order to enter\, invitations must be obtained from the Bidebarrieta Library between 14 and 19 June for the first conference\, and between 21 and 27 June for the last one. Collection time is from 10am to 2pm and from 4pm to 7pm\, Monday to Friday. \n\n\n\nFor those who are unable to attend the event\, the talks will be streamed live here. \n\n\n\n======= \n\n\n\nThe Speakers\n\n\n\nElena Vozmediano: Graduate in Art History from the Complutense University of Madrid and Art Critic who collaborates weekly in the El Cultural supplement. \n\n\n\nShe is a member of the Institute of Contemporary Art and has been awarded the 2012 GAC Prize for Art Criticism by the Catalan art galleries associations. She also received the Recognition of Contemporary Art from the IAC in 2014. \n\n\n\nConchi Lillo is a biologist and doctor in neurosciences by the USAL and professor at the Faculty of Biology of Salamanca since 2011. Her research focusses on the neurobiology of vision at INCYL (Institute of Neuroscience of Castilla y León)\, under the IBSAL (Institute for Biomedical Research of Salamanca). She runs the Electronic Microscopy Service of the University of Salamanca. She has published more than 60 scientific articles and collaborates with the scientific dissemination platforms Naukas and Desgranando Ciencia. \n\n\n\nPatri Tezanos is a psychologist who specialises in neuroscience and is a scientific influencer on the “Antroporama” YouTube channel. She combines this dissemination activity with research in the field of neuroscience at the Cajal Institute of the CSIC (Spanish Research Council) in Madrid. \n\n\n\nChristian García Bello is an artist with a degree in Fine Arts and a Master’s degree in Contemporary Art from the University of Vigo. He has made individual and joint exhibitions in fairs such as ARCOMadrid and ARTBO. He has developed projects in artistic residencies in Belgium\, the Netherlands and Russia. He has also been selected and awarded prizes in competitions such as those organised by the Auditorio de Galicia and the Fundación María José Jove\, among others. \n\n\n\nManuel F. Herrador is a civil engineer from the Polytechnic University of Madrid and holds a doctorate from the University of A Coruña (UDC)\, where he works as a professor and researcher in the area of Construction Engineering at the Higher Technical School of Civil Engineering. He is a member of the Construction Group of the UDC (gCons)\, the Skeptic Circle and the Galician Association of Scientific and Technological Culture Communicators (DivulgACCIÓN). \n\n\n\nSantiago de Molina is an architect and professor of projects at the San Pablo CEU University and the University of Alcalá de Henares. SUMMARY:Colour and its origins
DESCRIPTION:Details \n\n\n\n\nDate and time: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nColour is something we take for granted. But\, what is it? How is it formed? If nobody’s looking\, will things still have colour? \n\n\n\nTo respond to these matters\, we must dip into different areas of knowledge. From quantum physics to neuroscience and philosophy\, all these areas have attempted to explain one of the most fascinating phenomena we have before our eyes (or perhaps behind them?). This will be the intriguing topic of the next Scientific Bidebarrieta conference by scientific writer and industrial chemist César Tomé López. \n\n\n\nCésar Tomé is the editor of Cuaderno de Cultura Científica and Mapping Ignorance\, two publications issued by the Chair of Scientific Culture of the UPV/EHU. He will analyse the relevance of all of these elements in the conference “Colour and its origins”\, which will be held on 10 April\, at 7 pm\, at the Bilbao Bidebarrieta Library. \n\n\n\nThis scientific writer\, a trained industrial chemist\, has spent an immense part of his professional career working in different industries related\, in one way or another\, to the technical and commercial use of colour\, from pigment manufacturers to food companies. \n\n\n\nMr. Tomé López also has a master’s degree in Neuroscience and is the head of international projection at Euskampus Fundazioa. \n\n\n\nThis talk is part of the “Scientific Bidebarrieta” series\, an initiative organised every month by the Chair of Scientific Culture of the UPV/EHU and Bidebarrieta Library to discuss current scientific issues. \n\n\n\nAll of the talks are free of charge and open to all\, subject to seating capacity. However\, in order to enter\, invitations must be obtained from the library\, which will be available from 5 April. Invitations can be collected from 10am to 2pm and from 4pm to 8pm\, Monday to Friday. \n\n\n\nFor those who are not able to attend\, the talks are streamed live here.

In fact\, it would be impossible to fully understand human culture if we analyse these disciplines as unconnected elements. \n\n\n\nContemporary art and geology are clear examples of this fascinating interaction. The analysis of the relationship between both disciplines is precisely the aim of the third “Dialogues on the Border”\, which will take place on 27 March at Bidebarrieta Library in Bilbao. \n\n\n\nThe talk will start at 7pm and will analyse the connection between contemporary art and geology through the works of Carlos Irijalba\, one of the most international artists today. He will be interviewed by geologist Joaquín del Val\, author of the blog Arte y Geología. \n\n\n\nCarlos Irijalba is a multifaceted artist who works with various art media like photography\, video and sculpture\, as well as with various geological elements\, like fluorite crystal drilling\, for example. Irijalba’s art is a clear example of how art and science are inseparable\, as the main element in many of his works is science\, especially geology. The relationship between humans and their environment and the construction of reality\, time\, matter\, dimension\, scale and structure are key elements in his work \n\n\n\nThis event\, which mainly aims to create a space for dialogue between art and science\, is part of the “Scientific Bidebarrieta” series\, a monthly initiative organised by the Chair of Scientific Culture of the UPV/EHU and Bidebarrieta Library to discuss current scientific issues. \n\n\n\nThe Speakers \n\n\n\nCarlos Irijalba graduated in Fine Arts from the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). His works are included in public collections all over the globe and he has exhibited them in important places such as the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona\, Tabacalera in Madrid\, Guangdong Museum of Contemporary Art in China\, Centre Pompidou in Paris and the LMCC Art Center at Governors Island in New York. He has won several awards\, including the 2013 Purificación García Photography Award\, 2015 Shifting Foundation Grant\, 2010 PhotoEspaña Best New Photographer and ART Situations award at ARCO2018. \n\n\n\nJoaquín del Val graduated in Geology from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. After working at the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain\, he joined a geology consultancy firm in Bilbao where he carried out surveys and geological-geomorphological mapping. He has taken part in the development of thematic mapping of Ecuador and he is currently working in Seville as part of the Neotectonics\, Geomorphology and Paleoseismicity research group\, which is studying the environment of the nuclear power station of Almaraz. He writes a blog\, Arte y Geología (Art and Geology)\, which is about the connections between contemporary art and geology. \n\n\n\nAll of the talks are free\, subject to available seating. However\, attendees must request an invite at the library\, from 22 to 27 March. Invitations can be collected from 10am to 2pm and from 4pm to 8pm\, Monday to Friday. \n\n\n\nFor those who are not able to attend\, the talks are streamed live KulturguneaTB.

SUMMARY:On 13 March we will hold BCAM NAUKAS to celebrate PI DAY
DESCRIPTION:Details \n\n\n\n\nDate and time: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIt is arguably the most famous number in history. Pi\, represented by Greek letter π\, is one of the most important mathematical constants in history and has been studied for over 4\,000 years. Such is the fascination with this number over the centuries that now it even has its own day on the calendar. Pi Day is celebrated in March all over the globe. \n\n\n\nThis international event was suggested by US physicist Larry Shaw in 1988. The way in which March 14th is written in US English and in Basque coincides with the first three digits of the number (3-14 = martxoak 14 in Basque / 3-14 = March 14th in English)\, and it is also Albert Einstein’s date of birth. Thus\, in 2009 the US Congress officially declared March 14th as National Pi Day. \n\n\n\nPi Day is currently a well-known global celebration that goes beyond the realm of maths. This irrational number\, defined as the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter\, is used in various scientific fields like physics\, engineering and geology and has amazing practical applications in our everyday life. \n\n\n\nWe will be taking part in the celebrations in 2019 with the BCAM-NAUKAS event on 13 March at the UPV/EHU Bizkaia Aretoa building. BCAM-NAUKAS will include mathematical workshops for primary and secondary students during the morning\, and a series of short lectures aimed at the general public in the afternoon. \n\n\n\nThe event is an initiative from the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics (BCAM)\, as part of its tenth anniversary celebrations\, and the Chair of Scientific Culture of the University of the Basque Country. \n\n\n\nProgramme on 13 March – BCAM Naukas Pi Day \n\n\n\n9:00 – 16:15 MATHEMATICAL WORKSHOPS \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshops for students in the last years of primary school\, and secondary school students. SUMMARY:How does stress affect our social behaviour and its neural bases?
DESCRIPTION:Details \n\n\n\n\nDate and time: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStress is considered to be one of the body’s mechanisms to defend itself against potential risks and threats. While research has conventionally focussed on analysing the cognitive effects of this pathology\, significantly relevant studies have appeared in recent years on the way that stress can alter human behaviour and the brain region linked to social interactions. \n\n\n\nThis will be the starting point for the lecture given by Professor Dr. Carmen Sandi on 22 November at the Bizkaia Aretoa building in Bilbao. The lecture will start at 18:30 and is part of the Achucarro Forum\, focussed on the brain and scientific research on pathologies that affect it. \n\n\n\nDoctor Carmen Sandi has a distinguished career in studying stress and its effects. Her research has taken her all over the world to give lectures and she has written over 160 research articles and papers. She combines lecturing with her work as a researcher at the prestigious Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (Switzerland) and her recent appointment as president of the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS). \n\n\n\nUnder the title “¿Cómo afecta el estrés a nuestra conducta social y sus bases cerebrales? (How does stress affect our social behaviour and its neural bases?)\, the expert will present what effects acute and chronic stress produce\, as well as how traumatic experiences at an early age impact social and aggressive behaviour. The Doctor will also analyse different studies that are being carried out on animals in the laboratory to study neural changes that cause stress and are the bases underlying sociability and aggression. \n\n\n\nThe Achucarro Forum series of talks is organised by the ACHUCARRO Basque Center for Neuroscience\, in collaboration with the Chair of Scientific Culture of the UPV/EHU\, the Basque Government and the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). The talks intend to inform the general public about emerging issues and interesting facts related to the brain in an understandable and accessible language. \n\n\n\nThe conference is free and for all audiences\, however it is necessary to register in advance by sending an email to forum@achucarro.org or calling 94 601 81 35.

This will be one of the main issues that will be dealt with at the second “Dialogues on the Border” programme\, which will take place on 26 September at 7pm at Bidebarrieta Library in Bilbao.\n\n\n\nWith the aim of creating a space for dialogue between the arts and sciences\, the event has invited speakers like Argentinian writer Javier Argüello\, Theoretical Physics professor Pilar Hernández Gamazo and physicist and writer Juan José Gómez Cadenas\, who will be in charge or moderating the discussion. \n\n\n\nJavier Argüello’s novel\, “A propósito de Majorana” (Regarding Majorana)\, which is about the unexplained disappearance of physicist Ettore Majorana in 1938\, known for his particle physics studies\, will be the starting point for the second “Dialogues on the Border”. In this case\, science and literature will work together to show the how they connect in many ways when offering an answer to the uncertainty and questions around us. \n\n\n\nThis event is part of the “Scientific Bidebarrieta” series\, a monthly initiative organised by the Chair of Scientific Culture of the UPV/EHU and Bidebarrieta Library to discuss current scientific issues. \n\n\n\nParticipants\n\n\n\nPilar Hernández Gamazo is a Theoretical Physics professor at the University of Valencia and an expert on elementary particle physics. She gained her PhD from the Autonomous University of Madrid and has been working since then at important international centres like Harvard University and the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). She currently works at the Instituto de Física Corpuscular (IFIC)\, run by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the University of Valencia. \n\n\n\nJavier Argüello is a prominent Argentinian writer living in Barcelona since 2001. Some of his most important books include “El mar de todos los muertos” (Lumen\, 2008)\, “La música del mundo” (Galaxia Gutenberg\, 2011) and the book which will initiate the discussion on 26 September\, “A propósito de Majorana” (Literatura Random House\, 2015)\, a novel about the unexplained disappearance of physicist Ettore Majorana\, who was famous for his work on neutrinos. He currently works with newspaper El País\, several advertising agencies and as a teacher in the Arts School of the Ateneu Barcelonès. \n\n\n\nThe physicist\, scientific promoter and writer from Murcia\, Juan José Gómez Cadenas\, worked at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) for eight years\, as well as at Harvard and Massachusetts Universities. He currently works as a professor at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and at the Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC). He is also the Director of a Neutrino Physics group at the Instituto de Física Corpuscular and is working on an international neutrino experiment called NEXT at the Canfranc Underground Laboratory. He writes for Jot Down magazine and has published stories and novels like the scientific thriller called “Materia Extraña” (Espasa\, 2008)\, and “Los Saltimbanquis” (Encuentro\, 2018). \n\n\n\nAll of the talks are free\, subject to available seating. However\, attendees must request an invite at the library\, from 21 to 26 September. Invitations can be collected from 10am to 2pm and from 4pm to 8pm\, Monday to Friday. \n\n\n\nFor those who are not able to attend\, the talks are streamed live here.

SUMMARY:Haircuts by Children
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor the project ‘Haircuts by Children’ a group of children from the ‘IES San Adrian BHI’ secondary school will learn how to cut hair\, guided by a professional hairdresser. Then\, for two days these children will take over and run the Háptica salon\, in casco viejo\, where they will offer free haircuts to any adults who are prepared to put themselves in their hands. \n\n\n\n‘Haircuts by Children’ is a performance about crazy haircuts\, and also about power and trust. In this piece the audience is challenged to set their vanity aside\, relinquish control\, and trust that a child – as one of the leaders of the future\, and a capable and responsible citizen – has the creative ability\, dexterity and responsibility to command a sharp pair of scissors. \n\n\n\nMammalian is a research-art atelier dedicated to investigate the social sphere\, always on the lookout for contradictions to whip into aesthetically scintillating experiences. In all its forms\, Mammalian’s work fosters dialogue and dismantles barriers between individuals of all ages\, cultural\, economic and social backgrounds by bringing people together in new and unusual ways\, in Toronto\, Canada\, and around the world.

SUMMARY:"Zientziateka” programme: Nature\, Literature and Science
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe convergence among different fields of study has always been a wonderful tool to reflect globally and reliably the reality of each era. In this sense\, the connection between nature\, literature and science is\, perhaps\, one of the most marvellous ways that human beings have to design a window from which to contemplate and teach the world from multiple and complementary perspectives. \n\n\n\nThe unification of these three areas of knowledge will be the main theme of the conference cycle “Nature\, Literature and Science” that Azkuna Zentroa will host from 10 to 19 April. The event\, framed in the “Zientziateka” programme\, will include five conferences presented by scientists who will seek to combine the interaction of nature and the social environment reflected in the literature \n\n\n\nThe cycle “Nature\, Literature and Science” is organized by the Chair of Scientific Culture together with Azkuna Zentroa and in collaboration with the Provincial Council of Bizkaia and the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT)\, and it will serve as a prelude to the eleventh edition of Gutun Zuria\, the International Literature Festival of Bilbao (Festival de las Letras). \n\n\n\nThe new edition of this popular literary event will become a meeting point for national\, international and local writers and the general public from 23th April at Azkuna Zentroa. The event will focus on the work of the writer Henry David Thoreau\, renowned as the defender of the natural universe. Taking as a backdrop the bicentenary of Thoreau’s birth\, which was celebrated last year\, the theme of the Festival will be literature and nature conservation. \n\n\n\nThe conferences\n\n\n\nThe mathematician and professor of the UPV / EHU Raul Ibañez Torres will be in charge of inaugurating on 10 April\, a series of lectures regarding “Nature\, Literature and Science”. In his conference entitled “The Theorem of the Rose“(El teorema de la Rosa)\, the scientific disseminator will talk about the importance of mathematics as a fundamental tool for studying nature and understanding its beauty. The aim of this talk is to introduce the public into the mathematics of nature through the critical and creative eye of current literature. For this purpose\, Ibañez will provide the audience with some simple and interesting examples\, such as the Fibonacci sequence\, the golden ratio\, the knot theory or fractals. \n\n\n\nThe second conference\, entitled “Sudden Elements” (Elementos a vuelapluma) will take place on 12 April and will be chemist and disseminator Deborah García Belloso‘s responsibility. In her presentation\, García Belloso will analyse the leading role played by chemistry and its phenomena in literature. The speaker will invite the audience to immerse themselves in books and songs in which chemistry has sneaked in and has become a powerful literary element. \n\n\n\nOn the third day\, to be held on 16 April\, the biologist and professor of Physiology at the UPV/EHU Juan Ignacio Pérez Iglesias will bring to the audience the unexpected\, and sometimes\, beautiful relationship that exists between biology and literature. In his presentation\, “Animalien letrak” (The literature of animals)\, which will be taught in Basque\, Pérez Iglesias will analyse the influence that the close relationship between human beings and animals has had in literature\, cultivated or popular\, as well as in other artistic manifestations\, throughout history. \n\n\n\nThe astrophysicist and researcher of the Planetary Sciences group of the UPV/EHU Santiago Perez Hoyos will be the speaker of the conference on 18 April. In the talk “Explorando el espacio a través de la literatura de ciencia ficción” (Exploring space through science fiction literature)\, Perez Hoyos will explain how space has been explored in literature\, particularly through the science fiction novels written from the 21st century on. Through the analysis of some examples\, the astrophysicist will discuss the difficult relationship that has always existed between narrative license and scientific rigour\, as well as how science fiction literature has contributed to enriching the ideas of humanity regarding space. \n\n\n\nThe series of lectures will end on 19 April with the presentation of “La geología fantástica de Verne\, Poe y H.P. Lovecraft” (The fantastic geology of Verne\, Poe and H.P. Lovegraft). Blanca Maria Martinez Garcia\, geologist and researcher at the Aranzadi Science Society\, will speak about three renowned fantasy and horror literature authors who used geology as the central axis of their works. \n\n\n\nAll talks will begin at 7:00 p.m. Tickets must be collected at the Azkuna Zentroa information point and access to the venue if free.

SUMMARY:Marie Curie\, a legend in science and history
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRadium and polonium were discovered in 1898 by the iconic Curie marriage\, Pierre and Marie Curie. They both received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903\, a prize shared with the physicist Henri Becquerel. Although it was Marie who had carried out important research in the field of radioactivity\, she often delegated her work to the background due to the patriarchal context at the time; however\, her research work was so crucial that Curie is considered to be one of the most influential women in science to date. \n\n\n\nBoth in Warsaw in 1867\, Marie Salomea Sklodowska\, better known as Marie Curie\, was a pioneering woman in her time. In a society where women were not often seen in science\, the Polish chemist and physicist became the first female Physics Professor at the University of Paris\, and the first woman to receive two Nobel prizes in different specialities; she was awarded the Physics Prize in 1903\, and the Nobel Prize in Chemistry eight years later for being the first person to isolate a gramme of radium. \n\n\n\nThe UPV/EHU Faculty of Science and Technology has organised an exhibition called “María Sklodowska Curie\, a Polish Woman in Paris”\, aimed at sharing the life and contributions of the renowned scientist. The exhibition has been organised in collaboration with the Chair of Scientific Culture\, the Faculty of Medicine and Nursing\, and the Equality Directorate of the UPV/EHU\, and it can be visited at the Bizkaia Aretoa building in Bilbao until 27 April. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition will include a total of twenty panels that analyse Marie Curie’s work and dedication to research\, as well as her human and caring side. In addition to her role as a scientist\, Marie also made an outstanding contribution to health-care during the First World War\, as her x-ray work meant that the diagnosis and subsequent treatment of wounded soldiers was significantly improved. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition will be concluded with a cycle of three lectures which will start on 12 April with a presentation given by Dr Hélène Langevin-Joliot titled “Les Joliot-Curie\, mes parents\, et la radioctivité artificielle”. On 18 April\, Dr Naia Pereda will give a talk entitled “Marie Curie\, the first medical physicist”. The cycle will end with a presentation given by Dr Juan Carlos Martín Urreta entitled “Starting with M. Curie\, a tour through medical radiology”. \n\n\n\nThe lectures will be given at the Bizkaia Aretoa building at 18:30 and entrance is free\, although spaces are limited. SUMMARY:Pi Day
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe number π is one of the most important mathematical constants that exist. π is a fascinating number that is extremely popular\, and even has its own day. Pi Day has been celebrated on March 14th every year since 1988. The event was the physicist Larry Shaw’s idea\, who put forward the proposal and added that the day also coincided with Albert Einstein’s date of birth. In addition\, the way in which March 14th is written in US English and in Basque coincides with the first three digits of the number. (3-14 martxoaren 14 in Basque / 3-14\, March 14th in US English) \n\n\n\nIn recent years\, Pi Day celebrations have been expanding\, turning the day into an event that goes beyond the scope of mathematics. π is present in physics\, in Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle\, in the Theory of Relativity\, and Coulomb’s Law. It appears in geology when estimating the length of rivers; in biochemistry when studying the structure of a DNA molecule; in astronomy when studying the shape of the universe\, and in many more applications that affect our day-to-day lives. \n\n\n\nWe will be taking part in the Pi Day celebrations in 2018 with a special BCAM-NAUKAS event\, which will take place throughout the entire day (Thursday\, March 14th) at the UPV/EHU Bizkaia Aretoa building. BCAM-NAUKAS will include mathematical workshops for students during the morning\, and a series of short lectures aimed at the general public in the afternoon. \n\n\n\nThe event is an initiative from the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics (BCAM) and the Chair of Scientific Culture of the University of the Basque Country. \n\n\n\nPi Day Programme\n\n\n\n9:00 – 16:30 Mathematical Workshops\n\n\n\nWorkshops for students in the last years of primary school\, and secondary school students. SUMMARY:Dialogues on the border: Talk by artist Esther Ferrer and composer Tom Johnson
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlthough the relationship between different forms of knowledge may seem impossible\, the truth is that in many cases the link between them is essential and inevitable. Arts and sciences are a living example of the connection existing between different fields of study. And although it can be difficult to think about how artistic creation and scientific research can coexist\, the truth is that there are professionals who combine these disciplines in their daily work. \n\n\n\nAn example of this are the San Sebastian artist Esther Ferrer and the American minimalist composer Tom Johnson\, the protagonists of the first edition of the program “Dialogues on the border”\, which will be held on March 12 at 7:00 pm at the Bidebarrieta Library of Bilbao (Calle Bidebarrieta\, 4). \n\n\n\nThe event\, whose main objective is to create a space for dialogue between arts and sciences\, will gather in the Basque capital\, professors Josu Rekalde (Fine Arts) and Raúl Ibánez (Science and Technology) from the University of the Basque Country to discuss with Ferrer and Johnson the use of mathematics in their creative processes. \n\n\n\nThis event is part of the “Scientific Bidebarrieta” series\, a monthly initiative organised by the Chair of Scientific Culture of the UPV/EHU and Bidebarrieta Library to discuss current scientific issues. \n\n\n\nSpeakers \n\n\n\nThe San Sebastian artist Esther Ferrer is a pioneer of the performance art and one of its top representatives in Spain. Her work has been recognised with multiple awards such as the National Plastic Arts Award (2008)\, the Gure Artea Award (2012) and Marie Claire de l’Art Contemporain Award (2014). In her works\, exhibited all over the world\, multiple references to mathematics appear (prime numbers\, infinity in the Pi number\, geometry\, space and time …) related to minimalism\, conceptual art and feminism. \n\n\n\nThe musician Tom Johnson is a minimalist and theoretic composer of American music. He uses simple forms\, limited scales and mathematical elements such as combinatorics\, symmetry\, numbers or fractals for his compositions Some of his most outstanding works are the renowned Four Note Opera (1972)\, Rational Melodies (1982) and Kientzy Loops\, awarded with the French national award “Victoires de la musique 2000”; or more recent melodies such as Galileo (2001)\, Mosaics (2002) or Vermont Rhythms (2008). \n\n\n\nAll of the talks are free\, subject to available seating. However\, attendees must request an invite at the library\, from 7 to 12 March. Invitations can be collected from 10am to 2pm and from 4pm to 8pm\, Monday to Friday. \n\n\n\nFor those who are not able to attend\, the talks are streamed live here.

SUMMARY:Preventing and Treating Alzheimer's Disease: A Modern Approach
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDementia and Alzheimer’s disease are a great challenge facing our society today. They are a social and health-care problem which only in the Basque Country affects over 40\,000 people\, and this figure is expected to double by 2040. \n\n\n\nNowadays\, one in ten people over 65 suffer from Alzheimer’s disease\, the most common type of dementia in the elderly. It is a neurological pathology that costs about 24\,000 euros on average per patient every year and lasts an average of 8-10 years. It is therefore undeniable that we are facing a huge public challenge that can be and should be tackled right now. \n\n\n\nIn this context\, early diagnosis\, the use of available therapies and treatments\, and research into primary and secondary prevention measures are essential strategies to raise awareness of dementia\, optimise the quality of life of patients and their family caregivers\, and even cut the number of sufferers by half over the next decade or two. \n\n\n\nNeurologist Pablo Martínez-Lage\, Scientific Director of CITA Alzheimer Foundation\, will be in charge of presenting the most important aspects of this disease at a talk in Bilbao called “Preventing and Treating Alzheimer’s Disease: A Modern Approach”\, at 7pm on 5 March\, at Bidebarrieta Library (Calle Bidebarrieta\, 4). \n\n\n\nAmongst other things\, Martínez-Lage will talk about how this disease works\, risk factors and current treatments to control or delay onset. The doctor will also analyse the current role of early diagnosis\, clinical tests and the importance of prevention. \n\n\n\nThis talk is part of the “Scientific Bidebarrieta” series\, an initiative organised every month by the Chair of Scientific Culture of the UPV/EHU and Bidebarrieta Library to discuss current scientific issues. \n\n\n\nAll of the talks are free\, subject to available seating. However\, attendees need to pick up an invite at the library\, from 28 February to 5 March. Invitations can be collected from 10am to 2pm and from 4pm to 8pm\, Monday to Friday. \n\n\n\nFor those who are not able to attend\, the talks are streamed live here.
