SUMMARY:Science and art on street level
DESCRIPTION:Details \n\n\n\n\nDate and time: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThere are works of art that fascinate some\, and frighten others. There are some that go unnoticed\, and there are others that provoke anger\, or on the contrary\, bring about good sensations or even excitement. The same goes for spaces. There are places where it’s nice to be\, and there are places we feel we’re being kicked out. \n\n\n\nThe organisation of space undoubtedly affects us\, and our home\, our neighbourhood and our cities in some way determine the person we are today. But how does our perception respond when it comes to these spaces? What determines whether we like a work of art or a space? \n\n\n\nThe cycle of conferences – “Science and art on street level” will address this and other related issues with six experts from six different areas of expertise. Art and science will be intertwined in this cycle of conferences on 19 and 27 June\, which will take place at the Bidebarrieta Library in Bilbao. \n\n\n\nThis event is part of the “Scientific Bidebarrieta” series\, a monthly initiative organised by the Chair of Scientific Culture of the UPV/EHU and Bidebarrieta Library with the aim of promoting and disseminating scientific knowledge. \n\n\n\nThe cycle of conferences “Science and art on street level” will be inaugurated on 19 June at 7pm with a first multidisciplinary day that will analyse the relationship between art\, neurobiology and psychology\, with the participation of the neurobiologist Conchi Lillo\, the psychologist Patri Tezanos and the art critic Elena Vozmediano. \n\n\n\nThe second and final day of the cycle will be held on 27 June at 7pm\, with the participation of the architect Santiago de Molina\, the artist Christian García Bello and the structural concrete professor\, Manuel F. Herrador. The three speakers will discuss how engineering and architecture influence our perception of our everyday spaces. \n\n\n\nAll the talks that will be held in the cycle will be free of charge\, subject to seating capacity. However\, in order to enter\, invitations must be obtained from the Bidebarrieta Library between 14 and 19 June for the first conference\, and between 21 and 27 June for the last one. Collection time is from 10am to 2pm and from 4pm to 7pm\, Monday to Friday. \n\n\n\nFor those who are unable to attend the event\, the talks will be streamed live here. \n\n\n\n======= \n\n\n\nThe Speakers\n\n\n\nElena Vozmediano: Graduate in Art History from the Complutense University of Madrid and Art Critic who collaborates weekly in the El Cultural supplement. \n\n\n\nShe is a member of the Institute of Contemporary Art and has been awarded the 2012 GAC Prize for Art Criticism by the Catalan art galleries associations. SUMMARY:Colour and its origins
DESCRIPTION:Details \n\n\n\n\nDate and time: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nColour is something we take for granted. But\, what is it? How is it formed? If nobody’s looking\, will things still have colour? \n\n\n\nTo respond to these matters\, we must dip into different areas of knowledge. From quantum physics to neuroscience and philosophy\, all these areas have attempted to explain one of the most fascinating phenomena we have before our eyes (or perhaps behind them?). This will be the intriguing topic of the next Scientific Bidebarrieta conference by scientific writer and industrial chemist César Tomé López. \n\n\n\nCésar Tomé is the editor of Cuaderno de Cultura Científica and Mapping Ignorance\, two publications issued by the Chair of Scientific Culture of the UPV/EHU. He will analyse the relevance of all of these elements in the conference “Colour and its origins”\, which will be held on 10 April\, at 7 pm\, at the Bilbao Bidebarrieta Library. \n\n\n\nThis scientific writer\, a trained industrial chemist\, has spent an immense part of his professional career working in different industries related\, in one way or another\, to the technical and commercial use of colour\, from pigment manufacturers to food companies. \n\n\n\nMr. Tomé López also has a master’s degree in Neuroscience and is the head of international projection at Euskampus Fundazioa. \n\n\n\nThis talk is part of the “Scientific Bidebarrieta” series\, an initiative organised every month by the Chair of Scientific Culture of the UPV/EHU and Bidebarrieta Library to discuss current scientific issues. \n\n\n\nAll of the talks are free of charge and open to all\, subject to seating capacity. However\, in order to enter\, invitations must be obtained from the library\, which will be available from 5 April. Invitations can be collected from 10am to 2pm and from 4pm to 8pm\, Monday to Friday. \n\n\n\nFor those who are not able to attend\, the talks are streamed live here.

SUMMARY:Dialogues on the Border: Talk & Discussion by Carlos Irijalba and Joaquín del Val
DESCRIPTION:Details \n\n\n\n\nDate and time: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen we talk about such different disciplines as art and science\, it may be difficult to imagine that there can be a connection between them. But it is not actually that hard to discover a close and rich relationship between these two forms of knowledge. In fact\, it would be impossible to fully understand human culture if we analyse these disciplines as unconnected elements. \n\n\n\nContemporary art and geology are clear examples of this fascinating interaction. The analysis of the relationship between both disciplines is precisely the aim of the third “Dialogues on the Border”\, which will take place on 27 March at Bidebarrieta Library in Bilbao. \n\n\n\nThe talk will start at 7pm and will analyse the connection between contemporary art and geology through the works of Carlos Irijalba\, one of the most international artists today. He will be interviewed by geologist Joaquín del Val\, author of the blog Arte y Geología. \n\n\n\nCarlos Irijalba is a multifaceted artist who works with various art media like photography\, video and sculpture\, as well as with various geological elements\, like fluorite crystal drilling\, for example. Irijalba’s art is a clear example of how art and science are inseparable\, as the main element in many of his works is science\, especially geology. The relationship between humans and their environment and the construction of reality\, time\, matter\, dimension\, scale and structure are key elements in his work \n\n\n\nThis event\, which mainly aims to create a space for dialogue between art and science\, is part of the “Scientific Bidebarrieta” series\, a monthly initiative organised by the Chair of Scientific Culture of the UPV/EHU and Bidebarrieta Library to discuss current scientific issues. \n\n\n\nThe Speakers \n\n\n\nCarlos Irijalba graduated in Fine Arts from the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). His works are included in public collections all over the globe and he has exhibited them in important places such as the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona\, Tabacalera in Madrid\, Guangdong Museum of Contemporary Art in China\, Centre Pompidou in Paris and the LMCC Art Center at Governors Island in New York. He has won several awards\, including the 2013 Purificación García Photography Award\, 2015 Shifting Foundation Grant\, 2010 PhotoEspaña Best New Photographer and ART Situations award at ARCO2018. \n\n\n\nJoaquín del Val graduated in Geology from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. After working at the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain\, he joined a geology consultancy firm in Bilbao where he carried out surveys and geological-geomorphological mapping. He has taken part in the development of thematic mapping of Ecuador and he is currently working in Seville as part of the Neotectonics\, Geomorphology and Paleoseismicity research group\, which is studying the environment of the nuclear power station of Almaraz. He writes a blog\, Arte y Geología (Art and Geology)\, which is about the connections between contemporary art and geology. \n\n\n\nAll of the talks are free\, subject to available seating. However\, attendees must request an invite at the library\, from 22 to 27 March. Invitations can be collected from 10am to 2pm and from 4pm to 8pm\, Monday to Friday. \n\n\n\nFor those who are not able to attend\, the talks are streamed live KulturguneaTB.

SUMMARY:On 13 March we will hold BCAM NAUKAS to celebrate PI DAY
DESCRIPTION:Details \n\n\n\n\nDate and time: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIt is arguably the most famous number in history. Pi\, represented by Greek letter π\, is one of the most important mathematical constants in history and has been studied for over 4\,000 years. Such is the fascination with this number over the centuries that now it even has its own day on the calendar. Pi Day is celebrated in March all over the globe. \n\n\n\nThis international event was suggested by US physicist Larry Shaw in 1988. The way in which March 14th is written in US English and in Basque coincides with the first three digits of the number (3-14 = martxoak 14 in Basque / 3-14 = March 14th in English)\, and it is also Albert Einstein’s date of birth. Thus\, in 2009 the US Congress officially declared March 14th as National Pi Day. \n\n\n\nPi Day is currently a well-known global celebration that goes beyond the realm of maths. This irrational number\, defined as the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter\, is used in various scientific fields like physics\, engineering and geology and has amazing practical applications in our everyday life. \n\n\n\nWe will be taking part in the celebrations in 2019 with the BCAM-NAUKAS event on 13 March at the UPV/EHU Bizkaia Aretoa building. BCAM-NAUKAS will include mathematical workshops for primary and secondary students during the morning\, and a series of short lectures aimed at the general public in the afternoon. \n\n\n\nThe event is an initiative from the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics (BCAM)\, as part of its tenth anniversary celebrations\, and the Chair of Scientific Culture of the University of the Basque Country. \n\n\n\nProgramme on 13 March – BCAM Naukas Pi Day \n\n\n\n9:00 – 16:15 MATHEMATICAL WORKSHOPS \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshops for students in the last years of primary school\, and secondary school students. SUMMARY:Darwin Day 2019: the evolution of language\, and suicide and the Theory of Evolution
DESCRIPTION:Details \n\n\n\n\nDate and time: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn 12 February Bidebarrieta Library in Bilbao will be joining in the celebration of the 210th anniversary of the birth of scientist Charles Darwin\, author of the Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection. The Chair of Scientific Culture of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and the Circulo Escéptico have organised another Darwin Day\, which will focus on the evolution of language\, and suicide and the Theory of Evolution. \n\n\n\nThe 13th Darwin Day will start at 7pm and will include talks by Itziar Laka Mugarza\, professor in the Department of Linguistics and Basque Studies of the UPV/EHU\, and by Pablo Malo Ocejo\, psychiatrist from the Mental Health Network of Osakidetza in Bizkaia. \n\n\n\nItziar Laka\, in her talk called “The Evolution of Language”\, will analyse the scientific evidence of the origin and evolution of human language that has been gathered in recent years. It will help us to gain a better insight into the genetic and neurobiological foundations of language and the history of our species. The reasons why language has only developed in the human species will also be discussed. \n\n\n\nPsychiatrist Pablo Malo will talk about “Suicide and the Theory of Evolution”: how suicide and other types of self-destructive behaviour are the product of natural forces and phenomena; how they are part of our own nature\, even though our intuition often may tell us otherwise. \n\n\n\nHe will also discuss how the views and preconceptions that society has regarding suicide\, which is historically considered to be a sin and even a crime\, have been conditioned by our evolutionary history. \n\n\n\nThis meeting is part of the “Scientific Bidebarrieta” series\, a monthly initiative organised by the Chair of Scientific Culture of the UPV/EHU and Bidebarrieta Library to discuss current scientific issues. \n\n\n\nInvitations:\n\n\n\nAll of the talks are free of charge and open to all\, subject to seating capacity. However\, in order to enter\, invitations must be obtained from the library\, which will be available from 7 February. Invitations can be collected from 10am to 2pm and from 4pm to 8pm\, Monday to Friday. \n\n\n\nFor those who are not able to attend\, the talks are streamed live here. \n\n\n\nThe Speakers:\n\n\n\nItziar Laka Mugarza is a Linguistics professor and Director of “La Mente Bilingüe” Research Group at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). Her research combines theoretical linguistics and experimental methodology of psycho-neurolinguistics to study the representation and neural computation of language\, mainly focusing on syntax and bilingualism. \n\n\n\nPablo Malo Ocejo is a psychiatrist from the Mental Health Network of Osakidetza in Bizkaia He is the co-author of the book Psiquiatría Evolucionista: Una introducción and editor of the blog Evolución y Neurociencias. He is currently a member of the non-profit organisation Txori Herri Medical Association. \n\n\n\nDarwin Day:\n\n\n\nDarwin Day has been celebrated in the capital of Bizkaia since 2007 and it has become an event not to be missed by science lovers. Since then\, the conference has included the participation of leading figures from science and dissemination\, such as Maria Martinon\, Pilar Carbonero\, Juan Luis Arsuaga and Carmen Manzano\, among others. \n\n\n\nThis event is organised by the Círculo Escéptico\, the Chair of Scientific Culture of the UPV/EHU and Bidebarrieta Kulturgunea. SUMMARY:Ageing-On: fostering healthy and stimulating ageing for all people
DESCRIPTION:Details \n\n\n\n\nDate and time: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCurrently\, the elderly population is the fastest growing people group in the world. According to the data of the UN’s “World Population Prospects” report\, it is expected for people aged 60 or over to double by 2050 and triple by 2100; sky-rocketing from 962 million in 2017 to 2.1 billion by 2050\, and 3.1 billion by 2100. \n\n\n\nIn the Basque Country\, the population over 65 already accounts for 22% of the overall population. In this context\, an increasing amount of specific policies and actions are implemented to promote active ageing and achieve the best quality of life possible. \n\n\n\nThis is precisely one of the goals of the Ageing-On research group of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU)\, directed by Dr. Jon Irazusta and made up by specialists with a multi-disciplinary training. More specifically\, the main goal of this team is to improve the quality of life of the elderly through their participation in physical and cognitive exercise programmes that are tailored to each person’s needs. \n\n\n\nBegoña Sanz\, PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology by the UPV/EHU and Ageing-On researcher shall be responsible for presenting the group’s work to the public and will share the advantages of this type of programmes in a conference under the title “Ageing On: Fostering healthy and stimulating ageing for all people”\, which will be held on 30 January\, at 7pm at the Bidebarrieta Library in Bilbao (Calle Bidebarrieta\, 4). \n\n\n\nDuring the talk\, the researcher will expound on how this type of exercise programmes have a positive impact in the physical\, cognitive and psychological improvement of the participants and will analyse the fundamental role of this sort of training in healthy ageing. \n\n\n\nBegoña Sanz\, who is currently employed as an associate professor at the Department of Physiology of the UPV/EHU\, is a lecturer in the Medicine Degree\, the Master on Biomedical Research\, and the Master on Healthy Ageing and Quality of Life at the UPV/EHU. Her research career is linked to the study of molecular biomarkers\, one of the parameters addressed by the Ageing-On group. However\, in order to enter\, invitations must be obtained from the library\, which are available from 25 January. Invitations can be collected from 10am to 2pm and from 4pm to 8pm\, Monday to Friday. \n\n\n\nFor those who are not able to attend\, the talks are streamed live here.

SUMMARY:How does stress affect our social behaviour and its neural bases?
DESCRIPTION:Details \n\n\n\n\nDate and time: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStress is considered to be one of the body’s mechanisms to defend itself against potential risks and threats. While research has conventionally focussed on analysing the cognitive effects of this pathology\, significantly relevant studies have appeared in recent years on the way that stress can alter human behaviour and the brain region linked to social interactions. \n\n\n\nThis will be the starting point for the lecture given by Professor Dr. Carmen Sandi on 22 November at the Bizkaia Aretoa building in Bilbao. The lecture will start at 18:30 and is part of the Achucarro Forum\, focussed on the brain and scientific research on pathologies that affect it. \n\n\n\nDoctor Carmen Sandi has a distinguished career in studying stress and its effects. Her research has taken her all over the world to give lectures and she has written over 160 research articles and papers. She combines lecturing with her work as a researcher at the prestigious Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (Switzerland) and her recent appointment as president of the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS). \n\n\n\nUnder the title “¿Cómo afecta el estrés a nuestra conducta social y sus bases cerebrales? (How does stress affect our social behaviour and its neural bases?)\, the expert will present what effects acute and chronic stress produce\, as well as how traumatic experiences at an early age impact social and aggressive behaviour. The Doctor will also analyse different studies that are being carried out on animals in the laboratory to study neural changes that cause stress and are the bases underlying sociability and aggression. \n\n\n\nThe Achucarro Forum series of talks is organised by the ACHUCARRO Basque Center for Neuroscience\, in collaboration with the Chair of Scientific Culture of the UPV/EHU\, the Basque Government and the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). The talks intend to inform the general public about emerging issues and interesting facts related to the brain in an understandable and accessible language. \n\n\n\nThe conference is free and for all audiences\, however it is necessary to register in advance by sending an email to forum@achucarro.org or calling 94 601 81 35.

SUMMARY:Haircuts by Children
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor the project ‘Haircuts by Children’ a group of children from the ‘IES San Adrian BHI’ secondary school will learn how to cut hair\, guided by a professional hairdresser. Then\, for two days these children will take over and run the Háptica salon\, in casco viejo\, where they will offer free haircuts to any adults who are prepared to put themselves in their hands. \n\n\n\n‘Haircuts by Children’ is a performance about crazy haircuts\, and also about power and trust. In this piece the audience is challenged to set their vanity aside\, relinquish control\, and trust that a child – as one of the leaders of the future\, and a capable and responsible citizen – has the creative ability\, dexterity and responsibility to command a sharp pair of scissors. \n\n\n\nMammalian is a research-art atelier dedicated to investigate the social sphere\, always on the lookout for contradictions to whip into aesthetically scintillating experiences. In all its forms\, Mammalian’s work fosters dialogue and dismantles barriers between individuals of all ages\, cultural\, economic and social backgrounds by bringing people together in new and unusual ways\, in Toronto\, Canada\, and around the world.

SUMMARY:"Zientziateka” programme: Nature\, Literature and Science
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe convergence among different fields of study has always been a wonderful tool to reflect globally and reliably the reality of each era. In this sense\, the connection between nature\, literature and science is\, perhaps\, one of the most marvellous ways that human beings have to design a window from which to contemplate and teach the world from multiple and complementary perspectives. \n\n\n\nThe unification of these three areas of knowledge will be the main theme of the conference cycle “Nature\, Literature and Science” that Azkuna Zentroa will host from 10 to 19 April. The event\, framed in the “Zientziateka” programme\, will include five conferences presented by scientists who will seek to combine the interaction of nature and the social environment reflected in the literature \n\n\n\nThe cycle “Nature\, Literature and Science” is organized by the Chair of Scientific Culture together with Azkuna Zentroa and in collaboration with the Provincial Council of Bizkaia and the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT)\, and it will serve as a prelude to the eleventh edition of Gutun Zuria\, the International Literature Festival of Bilbao (Festival de las Letras). \n\n\n\nThe new edition of this popular literary event will become a meeting point for national\, international and local writers and the general public from 23th April at Azkuna Zentroa. The event will focus on the work of the writer Henry David Thoreau\, renowned as the defender of the natural universe. Taking as a backdrop the bicentenary of Thoreau’s birth\, which was celebrated last year\, the theme of the Festival will be literature and nature conservation. \n\n\n\nThe conferences\n\n\n\nThe mathematician and professor of the UPV / EHU Raul Ibañez Torres will be in charge of inaugurating on 10 April\, a series of lectures regarding “Nature\, Literature and Science”. In his conference entitled “The Theorem of the Rose“(El teorema de la Rosa)\, the scientific disseminator will talk about the importance of mathematics as a fundamental tool for studying nature and understanding its beauty. The aim of this talk is to introduce the public into the mathematics of nature through the critical and creative eye of current literature. For this purpose\, Ibañez will provide the audience with some simple and interesting examples\, such as the Fibonacci sequence\, the golden ratio\, the knot theory or fractals. \n\n\n\nThe second conference\, entitled “Sudden Elements” (Elementos a vuelapluma) will take place on 12 April and will be chemist and disseminator Deborah García Belloso‘s responsibility. In her presentation\, García Belloso will analyse the leading role played by chemistry and its phenomena in literature. The speaker will invite the audience to immerse themselves in books and songs in which chemistry has sneaked in and has become a powerful literary element. \n\n\n\nOn the third day\, to be held on 16 April\, the biologist and professor of Physiology at the UPV/EHU Juan Ignacio Pérez Iglesias will bring to the audience the unexpected\, and sometimes\, beautiful relationship that exists between biology and literature. In his presentation\, “Animalien letrak” (The literature of animals)\, which will be taught in Basque\, Pérez Iglesias will analyse the influence that the close relationship between human beings and animals has had in literature\, cultivated or popular\, as well as in other artistic manifestations\, throughout history. \n\n\n\nThe astrophysicist and researcher of the Planetary Sciences group of the UPV/EHU Santiago Perez Hoyos will be the speaker of the conference on 18 April. In the talk “Explorando el espacio a través de la literatura de ciencia ficción” (Exploring space through science fiction literature)\, Perez Hoyos will explain how space has been explored in literature\, particularly through the science fiction novels written from the 21st century on. Through the analysis of some examples\, the astrophysicist will discuss the difficult relationship that has always existed between narrative license and scientific rigour\, as well as how science fiction literature has contributed to enriching the ideas of humanity regarding space. \n\n\n\nThe series of lectures will end on 19 April with the presentation of “La geología fantástica de Verne\, Poe y H.P. Lovecraft” (The fantastic geology of Verne\, Poe and H.P. Lovegraft). Blanca Maria Martinez Garcia\, geologist and researcher at the Aranzadi Science Society\, will speak about three renowned fantasy and horror literature authors who used geology as the central axis of their works. \n\n\n\nAll talks will begin at 7:00 p.m. Tickets must be collected at the Azkuna Zentroa information point and access to the venue if free.

SUMMARY:Marie Curie\, a legend in science and history
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRadium and polonium were discovered in 1898 by the iconic Curie marriage\, Pierre and Marie Curie. They both received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903\, a prize shared with the physicist Henri Becquerel. Although it was Marie who had carried out important research in the field of radioactivity\, she often delegated her work to the background due to the patriarchal context at the time; however\, her research work was so crucial that Curie is considered to be one of the most influential women in science to date. \n\n\n\nBoth in Warsaw in 1867\, Marie Salomea Sklodowska\, better known as Marie Curie\, was a pioneering woman in her time. In a society where women were not often seen in science\, the Polish chemist and physicist became the first female Physics Professor at the University of Paris\, and the first woman to receive two Nobel prizes in different specialities; she was awarded the Physics Prize in 1903\, and the Nobel Prize in Chemistry eight years later for being the first person to isolate a gramme of radium. \n\n\n\nThe UPV/EHU Faculty of Science and Technology has organised an exhibition called “María Sklodowska Curie\, a Polish Woman in Paris”\, aimed at sharing the life and contributions of the renowned scientist. The exhibition has been organised in collaboration with the Chair of Scientific Culture\, the Faculty of Medicine and Nursing\, and the Equality Directorate of the UPV/EHU\, and it can be visited at the Bizkaia Aretoa building in Bilbao until 27 April. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition will include a total of twenty panels that analyse Marie Curie’s work and dedication to research\, as well as her human and caring side. In addition to her role as a scientist\, Marie also made an outstanding contribution to health-care during the First World War\, as her x-ray work meant that the diagnosis and subsequent treatment of wounded soldiers was significantly improved. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition will be concluded with a cycle of three lectures which will start on 12 April with a presentation given by Dr Hélène Langevin-Joliot titled “Les Joliot-Curie\, mes parents\, et la radioctivité artificielle”. On 18 April\, Dr Naia Pereda will give a talk entitled “Marie Curie\, the first medical physicist”. The cycle will end with a presentation given by Dr Juan Carlos Martín Urreta entitled “Starting with M. Curie\, a tour through medical radiology”. \n\n\n\nThe lectures will be given at the Bizkaia Aretoa building at 18:30 and entrance is free\, although spaces are limited. SUMMARY:Pi Day
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe number π is one of the most important mathematical constants that exist. π is a fascinating number that is extremely popular\, and even has its own day. Pi Day has been celebrated on March 14th every year since 1988. The event was the physicist Larry Shaw’s idea\, who put forward the proposal and added that the day also coincided with Albert Einstein’s date of birth. In addition\, the way in which March 14th is written in US English and in Basque coincides with the first three digits of the number. (3-14 martxoaren 14 in Basque / 3-14\, March 14th in US English) \n\n\n\nIn recent years\, Pi Day celebrations have been expanding\, turning the day into an event that goes beyond the scope of mathematics. π is present in physics\, in Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle\, in the Theory of Relativity\, and Coulomb’s Law. It appears in geology when estimating the length of rivers; in biochemistry when studying the structure of a DNA molecule; in astronomy when studying the shape of the universe\, and in many more applications that affect our day-to-day lives. \n\n\n\nWe will be taking part in the Pi Day celebrations in 2018 with a special BCAM-NAUKAS event\, which will take place throughout the entire day (Thursday\, March 14th) at the UPV/EHU Bizkaia Aretoa building. BCAM-NAUKAS will include mathematical workshops for students during the morning\, and a series of short lectures aimed at the general public in the afternoon. \n\n\n\nThe event is an initiative from the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics (BCAM) and the Chair of Scientific Culture of the University of the Basque Country. \n\n\n\nPi Day Programme\n\n\n\n9:00 – 16:30 Mathematical Workshops\n\n\n\nWorkshops for students in the last years of primary school\, and secondary school students. SUMMARY:Dialogues on the border: Talk by artist Esther Ferrer and composer Tom Johnson
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlthough the relationship between different forms of knowledge may seem impossible\, the truth is that in many cases the link between them is essential and inevitable. Arts and sciences are a living example of the connection existing between different fields of study. And although it can be difficult to think about how artistic creation and scientific research can coexist\, the truth is that there are professionals who combine these disciplines in their daily work. \n\n\n\nAn example of this are the San Sebastian artist Esther Ferrer and the American minimalist composer Tom Johnson\, the protagonists of the first edition of the program “Dialogues on the border”\, which will be held on March 12 at 7:00 pm at the Bidebarrieta Library of Bilbao (Calle Bidebarrieta\, 4). \n\n\n\nThe event\, whose main objective is to create a space for dialogue between arts and sciences\, will gather in the Basque capital\, professors Josu Rekalde (Fine Arts) and Raúl Ibánez (Science and Technology) from the University of the Basque Country to discuss with Ferrer and Johnson the use of mathematics in their creative processes. \n\n\n\nThis event is part of the “Scientific Bidebarrieta” series\, a monthly initiative organised by the Chair of Scientific Culture of the UPV/EHU and Bidebarrieta Library to discuss current scientific issues. \n\n\n\nSpeakers \n\n\n\nThe San Sebastian artist Esther Ferrer is a pioneer of the performance art and one of its top representatives in Spain. Her work has been recognised with multiple awards such as the National Plastic Arts Award (2008)\, the Gure Artea Award (2012) and Marie Claire de l’Art Contemporain Award (2014). In her works\, exhibited all over the world\, multiple references to mathematics appear (prime numbers\, infinity in the Pi number\, geometry\, space and time …) related to minimalism\, conceptual art and feminism. \n\n\n\nThe musician Tom Johnson is a minimalist and theoretic composer of American music. He uses simple forms\, limited scales and mathematical elements such as combinatorics\, symmetry\, numbers or fractals for his compositions Some of his most outstanding works are the renowned Four Note Opera (1972)\, Rational Melodies (1982) and Kientzy Loops\, awarded with the French national award “Victoires de la musique 2000”; or more recent melodies such as Galileo (2001)\, Mosaics (2002) or Vermont Rhythms (2008). \n\n\n\nAll of the talks are free\, subject to available seating. However\, attendees must request an invite at the library\, from 7 to 12 March. Invitations can be collected from 10am to 2pm and from 4pm to 8pm\, Monday to Friday. \n\n\n\nFor those who are not able to attend\, the talks are streamed live here.

SUMMARY:Preventing and Treating Alzheimer's Disease: A Modern Approach
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDementia and Alzheimer’s disease are a great challenge facing our society today. They are a social and health-care problem which only in the Basque Country affects over 40\,000 people\, and this figure is expected to double by 2040. \n\n\n\nNowadays\, one in ten people over 65 suffer from Alzheimer’s disease\, the most common type of dementia in the elderly. It is a neurological pathology that costs about 24\,000 euros on average per patient every year and lasts an average of 8-10 years. It is therefore undeniable that we are facing a huge public challenge that can be and should be tackled right now. \n\n\n\nIn this context\, early diagnosis\, the use of available therapies and treatments\, and research into primary and secondary prevention measures are essential strategies to raise awareness of dementia\, optimise the quality of life of patients and their family caregivers\, and even cut the number of sufferers by half over the next decade or two. \n\n\n\nNeurologist Pablo Martínez-Lage\, Scientific Director of CITA Alzheimer Foundation\, will be in charge of presenting the most important aspects of this disease at a talk in Bilbao called “Preventing and Treating Alzheimer’s Disease: A Modern Approach”\, at 7pm on 5 March\, at Bidebarrieta Library (Calle Bidebarrieta\, 4). \n\n\n\nAmongst other things\, Martínez-Lage will talk about how this disease works\, risk factors and current treatments to control or delay onset. The doctor will also analyse the current role of early diagnosis\, clinical tests and the importance of prevention. \n\n\n\nThis talk is part of the “Scientific Bidebarrieta” series\, an initiative organised every month by the Chair of Scientific Culture of the UPV/EHU and Bidebarrieta Library to discuss current scientific issues. \n\n\n\nAll of the talks are free\, subject to available seating. However\, attendees need to pick up an invite at the library\, from 28 February to 5 March. Invitations can be collected from 10am to 2pm and from 4pm to 8pm\, Monday to Friday. \n\n\n\nFor those who are not able to attend\, the talks are streamed live here.

SUMMARY:The first steps of darwinian evolution and cognitive biases and evolution\, on Darwin Day 2018
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn 12 February\, Bidebarrieta Library in Bilbao will host the 12th edition of Darwin Day\, which each year commemorates the birth of the author of the Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection. \n\n\n\nThe conference\, which will begin at 7pm\, will consist of two talks by Carlos Briones Llorente\, researcher at the Astrobiology Centre (CSIC-INTA)\, and Helena Matute\, professor of psychology at University of Deusto. After the talks\, which will bring the audience closer to the English naturalist’s popular theory from different scientific perspectives\, there will be a final discussion in which attendees can participate. \n\n\n\nThe talk by Briones\, entitled “The First Steps of Darwinian Evolution”\, will address the scientific advances of research into the origin of the first living beings. The scientist\, specialised in the origin and the early evolution of life\, will show how the first steps of the Darwinian evolution laid the bases for the construction of this biodiversity of which we form part. \n\n\n\nMatute will give a talk called “Cognitive Biases and Evolution”\, in which she will bring the so-called cognitive biases\, errors systematically committed by all people and which depend on how each mind is configured\, to the library in the capital of Biscay. In her talk\, the professor will address the ins and outs of these thought “short-cuts”\, which have arisen in an evolutionary context and have their own raison d’être. \n\n\n\nThe journalist\, Alfonso Gámez\, will be in charge of leading these talks\, which are part of the “Scientific Bidebarrieta” series\, an initiative organised every month by the Chair of Scientific Culture of the UPV/EHU and Bidebarrieta Library to discuss current scientific issues. \n\n\n\nAll of the talks are free of charge and open to all\, subject to seating capacity. However\, in order to enter\, invitations must be obtained from the library\, which are available from 5 February. Invitations can be collected from 10am to 2pm and from 4pm to 8pm\, Monday to Friday. \n\n\n\nFor those who are not able to attend\, the talks are streamed live here. \n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\nCarlos Briones is a Doctor in Chemical Sciences (specialised in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology) from the Autonomous University of Madrid\, with a Doctoral Thesis at the “Severo Ochoa” Molecular Biology Centre (CSIC-UAM). Briones is the CSIC Resident Scientist at the Astrobiology Centre (CSIC-INTA)\, associated with the NASA Astrobiology Institute)\, where he has led a group that is researching the origin and early evolution of life\, replicative systems based on RNA and the development of biosensors\, since 2000. \n\n\n\nHelena Matute is a psychology professor at University of Deusto\, where she runs the Experimental Psychology Laboratory and researches human learning and memory\, more specifically issues related to cognitive biases and causal illusions. Matute has been the President of the Spanish Society of Experimental Psychology and the Spanish Society for Comparative Psychology\, which is the speciality that studies cognitive processes in the different animal species. \n\n\n\nDarwin Day\n\n\n\nDarwin Day has been celebrated in Bilbao since 2007. Since then\, the conference has included the participation of leading figures from science and dissemination\, such as Francisco J. Ayala\, Pilar Carbonero\, Juan Luis Arsuaga and Manuel Toharia\, among others. This has turned the talks into an important event for science lovers in the capital of Biscay. \n\n\n\nThis event is organised by the Skeptical Circle\, the Chair of Scientific Culture of the UPV/EHU and Bidebarrieta Kulturgunea. El Correo newspaper and the Provincial Council of Bizkaia also collaborate in it.

SUMMARY:Education Testing
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow are some of the most common cognitive disorders dealt with in the classroom? Are the programmes and tools in the current education system effective? Do some of the most popular educational practices lack effectiveness? \n\n\n\nThese are some of the issues to be discussed at the “Education Testing” seminar which will be held on 2 February at the Bizkaia Aretoa in Bilbao. The event\, which is held for the second time this year\, is organised by the Chair of Scientific Culture of the UPV/EHU and the Basque Country School Board\, with collaboration from the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT). \n\n\n\nFrom 09:00 to 13:30 the day will include presentations by several experts who will expose multiple issues related to education\, based on the existing scientific evidence. The specialists will place special emphasis on what is the best evidence available today with the objective of addressing the different realities that coexist in the classroom and in the education system in general. \n\n\n\n“Education Testing” is part of a series of events organised by the Chair of Scientific Culture of the UPV/EHU to tackle everyday questions\, such as education or art from various scientific perspectives. The seminar is run by the Doctor in Psychology Marta Ferrero. \n\n\n\nEntry is free\, but places are limited and an e-mail must be sent to the following address kzk.ehu@gmail.com\, indicating your name\, surnames and work centre. \n\n\n\nSpeakers:\n\n\n\nThe conference will consist of a series of presentations lasting between 20 and 30 minutes which will contrast the educational practices currently in use with scientific evidence. \n\n\n\nThe presentation titled “Autism and education: Problems and patterns in the classroom”\, by José Ramón Alonso\, Doctor in Biology and Professor of Cell Biology at the University of Salamanca\, will discuss the concept of autism\, its possible causes and the most common treatments with the aim of identifying specific guidelines that can help teachers deal with this cognitive disorder in the classroom. \n\n\n\nStarting from the premise that there is a wide gap between research and educational practice\, the Doctor in Psychology Marta Ferrero will address the details of strategies that have now become “public enemies” of the system: assessments and homework. Ferrero will explain based on scientific evidence how these educational practices\, when used correctly\, can constitute an important tool for teachers. \n\n\n\nBeronika Azpillaga\, associate Professor in the Department of Research and Diagnosis Methods in Education at the UPV/EHU will present the results of two research projects that have been developed in the Basque Country in the field of effectiveness and improvement for schools. Azpillaga will explain the results of the diagnostic assessment and the achievement levels obtained statistically in the studies\, led by Professor Luis Lizasoain. \n\n\n\nJoana Acha\, a Professor in the Department of Basic Psychological Processes and their Development at the UPV/EHU will review the most effective prevention and intervention methods used to develop basic skills associated with dyslexia. The specialist in children’s cognitive processes will provide evidence of the changes to the brain that accompany acquiring such skills. \n\n\n\nThe Doctor in Psychology Joaquín Morís will discuss the role that memory has in teaching and learning processes. The expert will review some of the most important concepts related to the field of memory\, and will analyse the evidence-based techniques that are derived from these concepts and how they can be applied to daily practice in the classroom. \n\n\n\nThe day will end with a talk by Inger Enkvist\, Professor of Spanish Philology at the University of Lund\, Sweden. The expert will bring the ins and outs of the Swedish education system closer to the locals of Bizkaia. Between 1962 and 1985 the Nordic country adopted a series of education laws that introduced what the British call “comprehensive school”\, that is\, a single option for all students from the age of 7 to 16. \n\n\n\nIn his presentation\, Enkvist will mention the discussions prior to the first decision made in 1962\, the protests\, the difficulties and the consequences of imposing this school system for education in Sweden. Now\, more than fifty years later\, the expert will lay on the table the need for reform in order to cope with a new social situation. \n\n\n\nThe programme is completed with a final discussion in which attendees and speakers will share their different points of view and exchange questions and opinions. \n\n\n\nProgramme:\n\n\n\n\n09:00 – 09:10 Access\n\n\n\n09:10 – 9:20 Presentation\n\n\n\n09:20 – 09:50 “Autism and education: Problems and patterns in the classroom”\, José Ramón Alonso.\n\n\n\n09:50 – 10:20 “Assessments and homework: Public enemies or faithful allies?”\, Marta Ferrero.\n\n\n\n10:20 – 10:50 “School effectiveness and improvement in the Basque Country: Case Studies”\, Beronika Azpillaga.\n\n\n\n10:50 – 11:20 Break\n\n\n\n11:20 – 11:50 “Intervention for dyslexia: From scientific evidence to educational practice”\, Joana Acha.\n\n\n\n11:50 – 12:20 “The role of memory in the teaching-learning process”\, Joaquin Moris.\n\n\n\n12:20 – 12:50 “How to destroy a good education system. DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nResearch carried out over the past twenty years has found that the regeneration capacity of damaged tissue is connected to the presence of specific stem cells. This is precisely the premise on which regenerative medicine and cell therapy are based\, where advanced therapy drugs are used to treat certain human diseases. \n\n\n\nBut which scientific principles justify the use of these drugs and which regulatory and scientific difficulties must be overcome in order to use them in clinical practice? Dr Felipe Prósper Cardoso\, Head of the Cellular Therapy Unit and Co-director of the Haematology Unit at the Navarra University Clinic will discuss the reality and future challenges of cell therapies at a talk entitled “Regenerative Medicine: Using Stem Cells to Treat Human Diseases”\, at 7pm on 31 January\, at Bidebarrieta Library in Bilbao (Calle Bidebarrieta\, 4). \n\n\n\nDoctor in Pharmaceutical Technology at the UPV/EHU\, Gorka Orive\, will be in charge of leading this talk\, which is part of the “Scientific Bidebarrieta” series organised every month by the Chair of Scientific Culture of the UPV/EHU and Bidebarrieta Library to discuss current scientific issues. \n\n\n\nAll the talks are free\, subject to available seating. For those who are not able to attend\, the talks are streamed live here.

SUMMARY:Achucarro Forum: Brain\, Mind and Autoimmunity
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur immune system can modify the function of several brain receptors by synthesising antibodies. This phenomenon causes behaviour\, memory and personality changes\, and psychosis. Nowadays\, thanks to the development of diagnostic tests\, we are able to identify these problems and treat them adequately. These processes are also natural models of neuronal diseases\, so they help us to better understand how the human brain works. \n\n\n\nNeurologist and researcher Josep Dalmau will be talking about these autoimmune brain diseases at a talk entitled “Brain\, Mind and Autoimmunity“. \n\n\n\nThe talk will take place on 26 October in the Auditorium of Dock Bilbao\, and is part of the Achucarro Forum series of talks organised by Achucarro\, the Basque Center for Neuroscience\, with the aim of raising awareness of brain research and its diseases. The talk is being organised together with the Chair of Scientific Culture of the UPV/EHU. \n\n\n\nThe talk will be in Spanish and admission is free\, subject to available seating. Attendance must be confirmed by writing an email to forum@achucarro.org or calling 94 601 81 35.

SUMMARY:Mestizajes / 3rd International Conference on Literature and Science
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat is matter? How can a group of atoms lead to life? How is it possible that a cluster of neurons makes us conscious? The answer to these questions varies depending on whether they are analysed from the point of view of science\, literature or humanities. The link between these disciplines\, however\, is closer than we think. In this context\, the Mestizajes programme aims to foster intellectual diversity and break away from hyper-specialisation of knowledge\, so that literature\, science and humanities can complement each other for mutual enrichment. \n\n\n\nProminent professionals like writer Luisa Etxenike\, physicist Jose Edelstein\, philologist Jordi Fortuny and others will try to promote dialogue between these three forms of knowledge at the 3rd International Conference on Literature and Science. This time it will focus on matter\, life and consciousness. \n\n\n\nThe talks\, that are open to the public\, will take place on 23\, 24 and 25 October at San Telmo Museum in San Sebastian\, from 6-9pm. SUMMARY:Cervantes the Star and its Exoplanets
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn December 2015 a subgiant star that is 49.8 light years from Earth was named Cervantes. There are four exoplanets orbiting this celestial body in the Ara constellation\, forming a new planet system. These exoplanets are called Quijote\, Rocinante\, Dulcinea and Sancho. \n\n\n\nThe proposal by Pamplona Planetarium\, the Society of Spanish Astronomers and Instituto Cervantes won the popular vote after the International Astronomical Union launched a process for choosing a name for this recently discovered planet system. \n\n\n\nAt this talk & discussion\, “Cervantes the Star and its Exoplanets”\, Javier Gorgas\, Astrophysics Professor at the Complutense University of Madrid and Chairman of the Society of Spanish Astronomers\, will be talking about this initiative and will explain what this system is like physically and how exoplanets are discovered. \n\n\n\nThe event will take place on 22 July at 7pm at Bidebarrieta Library (Bilbao). The talk will be in Spanish and admission is free.

SUMMARY:Summer Course of UPV/EHU: "A Scientific Adventure: From Subatomic Particles to Knowledge"
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn order to acquire and shape knowledge we need to receive and create information\, and for these processes we have a machine – which we call cognitive – which is made up of various receptor systems and a central device: the brain. Science has enabled us to unravel many of the elements that take part in this process – from the nature of the signals we receive from the outside and the mechanisms of transduction\, transmission and neural processing of these signals\, to the way in which the brain builds images\, sounds\, feelings\, emotions and knowledge. \n\n\n\nThese are the key concepts we will be covering on this summer course of the University of the Basque Country. We will explore these processes over several different sessions\, focusing especially on the way in which we perceive and process smells\, music\, art and language\, which are essential parts of human emotions and knowledge. And we will finish by analysing the limits imposed on human knowledge as a result of the studied phenomena. \n\n\n\nThe course\, which is promoted by the Chair of Scientific Culture of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and Ikerbasque Foundation\, will take place at Miramar Palace in San Sebastián\, from 10 to 12 July\, with the following programme: \n\n\n\n10 July\n\n\n\nFernando Cossío (Faculty of Chemistry\, UPV/EHU; San Sebastián): Introduction: A Journey Through Matter \n\n\n\nJoaquín Sevilla (Public University of Navarre\, Pamplona): The Nature of Light and Sound \n\n\n\nXabier López (DIPC and Faculty of Chemistry\, UPV/EHU; San Sebastián): The Light in your Eyes: The Receptor Molecule \n\n\n\nMiren Bego Urrutia (Faculty of Science and Technology\, UPV/EHU; Leioa): From the Senses to the Brain: Transducers \n\n\n\n11 July\n\n\n\nAntonio Martínez Ron (Next\, Vozpópuli; Madrid): The Journey of Light \n\n\n\nJosé Ramón Alonso (Faculty of Biology\, University of Salamanca; Salamanca): From Floating Molecules to Uncontrolled Emotions \n\n\n\nAlmudena Martín Castro (Faculty of Sciences\, UNED; StyleSage; Madrid): Music\, Physics and Meaning \n\n\n\nClara Martin (BCBL\, Ikerbasque; San Sebastián): The Electric Brain Perceives Language \n\n\n\n12 July\n\n\n\nItziar Laka (Faculty of Arts\, UPV/EHU; Vitoria): Condemned to Sense \n\n\n\nDeborah García Bello (Dimetilsulfuro; A Coruña): The Significance of Materials in Contemporary Art \n\n\n\nLuís Martínez (Institute of Neuroscience of Alicante\, CSIC-Miguel Hernández University; Alicante): The Recreative Mind \n\n\n\nJuan Ignacio Pérez (Faculty of Science and Technology\, UPV/EHU): The Limits of Knowledge

SUMMARY:Summer Course of UPV/EHU: "Culture with M for Maths: A Mathematical View of Art and Culture"
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIf we think of art as a way of interpreting the world we live in\, we inevitably find connections with philosophy and science in general\, and with maths in particular. Nowadays the close relationship between art and maths is no longer a surprise. For mathematicians\, the aesthetic beauty of a mathematical result is similar to that of architectural symmetry or literary elegance. What’s more\, maths often take part in the conception and creation process of a work of art. \n\n\n\nThese and other topics will be covered by prominent experts at a course called “Culture with M for Maths: A Mathematical View of Art and Culture”\, which will take place on 6 and 7 June at the Bizkaia Aretoa building in the UPV/EHU (Bilbao). The presentations are part of the UPV/EHU’s 36th summer courses. \n\n\n\nThis course will offer the chance to examine in detail some examples of this relationship\, from plastic to audiovisual arts (literature\, games\, video games\, design)\, including the history of art and of science. \n\n\n\nOfficial Website of the Course.\n\n\n\nProgramme: \n\n\n\n6 July \n\n\n\n9 – 9.15am Distribution of materials and course introduction \n\n\n\n9.15 – 10.30am Raúl Ibáñez Torres (UPV/EHU): Fermat’s Last Theorem in Literature \n\n\n\n10.45am – 12pm Aida Inmaculada Conejo Pérez (Brains María Lombillo School): What is an origamist doing in the NASA? SUMMARY:International Conference Art\, Illustration and Visual Culture in Preschool and Primary Education
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChildhood relationships with arts and contemporary visual culture are progressively more intense and complex. In previous editions of the Conference different aspects related to the diverse connections between art\, visual culture and childhood have been examined. This edition aims to tackle aspects concerning educational mediation that implies an increasing attention to children’s art and visual culture context and vice-versa. \n\n\n\nThis phenomenon includes what is usually known in the world of visual arts as educational change\, highlighting at least two questions: on one hand the awareness of the educational dimension that the artistic action entails which has been very probably ignored in the past. In consequence\, on the other hand\, the opening of a new field of activity for artists\, designers\, illustrators\, children’s publishers and cultural institutions that find in this way to perceive art a spur to renew their proposals. \n\n\n\nAll of us are aware of the significance of the changes that the social habits\, the new interactions with culture supported by the current technologies or determinate pedagogical trends just arrived at schools mean for this new way of relating childhood with arts and visual culture. Therefore\, we have also considered that this edition of the conference could not avoid trying to analyze the complexity of this situation. As well we wanted to take advantage of the collaboration in the conference of a new cultural project very linked to this phenomenon\, Tabakalera of Donostia. \n\n\n\nTo start with\, it is interesting to observe that\, especially in the context of museums and cultural institutions\, the term of mediation is the one to have crystallized. This fact is understandable if we bear in mind that as a result of this educational change these institutions can be seen as the link between population and culture producers. However\, at the educational context\, we rather talk about education\, stressing the purpose of the cultural activity that we carry out instead of the role that we play in it. This terminological discrepancy is the reflection of the positions and the cultural politics that are boosted from each institutional field. For this reason\, we think that it is important to tackle in this edition of the Conference reflections on conceptions on mediation\, art\, visual culture\, education or childhood that underlie in these actions. \n\n\n\nIt is also interesting to observe the phenomenon from the point of view of the topics and individuals of the proposals of educational mediation: who are the actors\, who are the recipients\, who or what remains excluded. In this regard\, we could not avoid such present phenomena like the discussion about the identity of the artist as educator or the educator as artist\, as well as the questions that arise about the place that children occupy in the curator practices\, activities of museums\, art institutions or visual proposals in the field of illustration. \n\n\n\nTalking about mediation necessarily involves a careful study of the type of processes that such activity involves. For that purpose\, the Conference offers an opportunity to explore the connections that can be settled among artistic institutions\, publishing proposals and educational institutions. The division of roles between the cultural institutions and the school\, among commissioners\, museum educators\, illustrators\, artists and faculty entails the coexistence of a large disparity of educational strategies and methodological perspectives in the acts of mediation that need to be critically assessed. Thus\, this is the moment to display the current experiences and practices of mediation that are being developed at art institutions\, schools\, publishing projects or daily activities of artists and educators. This is pertinent in order to better evaluate the interactions that occur amongst all the agents that take part in these actions of mediation\, the proposed programs\, the processes that are generated and the obtained results. \n\n\n\nThe task that we pose\, as it is evident\, is as ambitious as it is necessary. It will not be easy to answer all these questions\, but we are sure that the Conference will contribute to clear many of them.
