SUMMARY:The Universes Beyond the Horizon
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAccording to several observations\, a large part of the universe is expanding. The Earth is in a region of the universe where that kind of violent expansion has already finished. However\, other regions are constantly being created in this process of explosive evolution\, with properties that are very different to ours. This has led to the idea of the existence of parallel universes – a phenomenon also known as “multiverse”. \n\n\n\nScientist Alexander Vilenkin\, director of the Institute of Cosmology at Tufts University in the US and one of the world’s most renowned cosmologists\, will be discussing this theory at a talk called “The Universes Beyond the Horizon”. He will explain where these ideas came from\, the observations they are based on and the implications they have for the theories of the origin and future of the universe. \n\n\n\nThe talk will take place on 17 May in Bidebarrieta Library\, in Bilbao\, and is organised by the Chair of Scientific Culture of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU)\, the Department of Theoretical Physics and History of Science and the library. The talk will be in English\, but simultaneous interpretation into Spanish will be available. \n\n\n\nAdmission is free but tickets can be collected in advance at Bidebarrieta Library (10-17 May\, 10am-2pm / 4-8pm\, except Saturday and Sunday) or at this link (10-16 May). Advance tickets will be limited to two per person.

SUMMARY:Is the new food pyramid really new?
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA new food pyramid was brought out recently. This document\, based on the contributions of more than one hundred food and public health experts\, aims to promote healthy eating habits. Some changes that have been made to the guide that came out in 2001 include vitamin and mineral supplements\, the difference between fruit and vegetables and advice to limit alcohol consumption even further. Why have these changes been made? What effects will they have? \n\n\n\nEdurne Simón\, Professor of Nutrition and Bromatology at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU)\, will answer these questions and explain the keys to the new food guide at a talk called “Is the new food pyramid really new?” The event will take place on 9 May at Azkuna Zentroa in Bilbao. It will be in Basque and is part of the Zientziateka programme. \n\n\n\nZientziateka is a monthly series of conferences organised by the Chair of Scientific Culture of the University of the Basque Country and Azkuna Zentroa to raise awareness of current scientific matters. \n\n\n\nTickets should be collected from the Azkuna Zentroa Information Point. Access is free.

SUMMARY:Candida auris\, the fungus that has caused an international health alert
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOver the past few months\, several national and international agencies have issued various alerts on the expansion of a type of fungus\, called Candida auris\, which causes serious infections in critical hospital patients. This infectious agent is hard to identify\, is highly resistant to existing drugs\, and can cause high mortality rates. It has been especially present to date in countries like Spain\, Denmark and the US. \n\n\n\nGuillermo Quindós\, Professor of Microbiology at the UPV/EHU\, will explain about this organism at a talk called “Candida auris\, the fungus that has caused an international health alert”. \n\n\n\nThe session will take place on 4 April at Azkuna Zentroa (Bilbao) and will be in Spanish. It is part of Zientziateka\, a monthly series of conferences organised by the Chair of Scientific Culture of the University of the Basque Country and Azkuna Zentroa to raise awareness of current scientific matters. \n\n\n\nTickets should be collected from the Azkuna Zentroa Information Point. SUMMARY:Produce or perish: Science under pressure
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe expression ‘publish or perish’ is popular in the scientific world\, since it shows the importance of publications in the curricula of the research staff. There is more to science than observing\, obtaining results and reaching conclusions. One also has to make it public and\, if possible\, in journals with high international impact. Science that isn’t shared\, that isn’t published\, doesn’t exist. The problem is that the professional success of researchers depends on this\, as do their chances of stability and promotion. Which is why this expression is so popular. \n\n\n\nBut the communication world also has its rules. Media wants people to consume what has been published. Just like science that isn’t published doesn’t exist\, in communication\, the contents that are not consumed don’t exist either. In other words\, the papers that are not read\, the radio programmes that are not heard\, the TV programmes that are not watched or the websites that are not visited\, they don’t exist. In media\, we could say ‘be seen\, listened or read… or perish’. \n\n\n\nAnd both arenas meet in this interesting common ground. Of course\, in scientific communication or dissemination the confluence is obvious. Here\, both needs meet\, the need of making research results public and making them reach the largest amount of people are shared goals. \n\n\n\nThe problem is that the pressure to publish and have communicative impact can lead to both professional groups to adopt dishonest behaviours that are contrary to professional ethics and that may completely distort the purpose of Science and its transfer to the entire social body. It may also lead\, and in fact has led\, to the creation of a system of scientific publications with pathologies. \n\n\n\nAll of these issues shall be addressed on 31 March\, in the seminar “Produce or perish: Science under pressure” that the Chair of Scientific Culture of the UPV/EHU has organised alongside the Spanish Association of Scientific Communication (AECC). For this\, we have a group of wonderful professionals (scientists\, lawyers\, journalists) with accredited experience who will discuss these topics. \n\n\n\nTo attend the event\, it is necessary to register by writing to: jornadas@aecomunicacioncientifica.org \n\n\n\nProgramme:\n\n\n\nMorning session\n\n\n\n9:15 Presentation: Spanish Association of Scientific Communication – Chair of Scientific Culture. \n\n\n\n9:30-10:00 “Scientists endorsing nonsense”. SUMMARY:Education Testing
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAre the current education systems and programmes effective? The debate generated around this topic has increased in recent years. Many experts argue that educational theory and practice implemented in centres is lacking scientific evidence. The effort and resources used in these practices of questionable usefulness force other theories whose effectiveness has been proven to be pushed aside. \n\n\n\nIn order to deal with this situation\, the Bizkaia Aretoa in Bilbao will host the conference entitled “Education Testing” on 17th March from 9am to 1pm\, in which various experts will discuss questions related to education from a scientific point of view. \n\n\n\n“Education Testing” forms part of a series of events organised by the Chair of Scientific Culture of the UPV/EHU to tackle everyday questions\, such as education or art from a scientific perspective. \n\n\n\nEntry is free\, but an e-mail must be sent to the following address kzk.ehu@gmail.com indicating your name\, surnames and work centre. \n\n\n\nSpeakers:\n\n\n\nThe conference will consist of a series of presentations lasting between 20 and 30 minutes which will contrast the educational practices currently in use with scientific evidence. \n\n\n\nIn the presentation entitled “Study into school effectiveness in the Basque Country”\, Beronika Azpillaga and Luis Lizasoain\, members of the Basque Institute for Research and Evaluation in Education\, will present the results of a study carried out to identify good teaching practices used in high performing schools in the Basque Country. \n\n\n\nThen\, the Doctor in Education\, Juan Cruz Ripoll\, will question the official protocols to deal with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) as well as the guidance on the internet portal like leer.es\, an initiative from the Ministry for Education\, Culture and Sport\, which seeks to encourage reading. In spite of the official support for both of them\, Ripoll argues that they lack a scientific base and relegate other practices that are better founded on research. \n\n\n\nThe teacher and disseminator\, Albert Reverter\, will look at diverse pseudo-scientific questions in education\, such as the theory through which people learn better if taught through their preferred learning style. He will also look at the so-called “brain gym” which consists of a series of exercises aimed at activating the brain\, fostering neurological restructuring and facilitating the ability to learn. In spite of its great popularity\, there are no scientific studies that support its effectiveness. \n\n\n\nThe presentation by the Doctor in Psychology\, Marta Ferrero\, will deal with the most extended education misconceptions among teaching staff. She will identify the factors that facilitate or provoke the growing appearance of pseudo-scientific ideas in the school environment and will propose some solutions at different levels. \n\n\n\nThe conference will conclude with a talk by the teacher\, educator and Doctor in Philosophy\, Gregorio Luri\, in defence of internal and external school assessment\, which\, in his opinion\, is needed to collect data on the errors committed and the real progress achieved\, and to draw conclusions that enable the education system to be improved. \n\n\n\nProgramme:   \n\n\n\n\n9 – 9.10am Entry\n\n\n\n9.10 – 9.20am Presentation\n\n\n\n9.20 – 10am Beronika Azpillaga and Luis Lizasoain: “Study into school effectiveness in the Basque Country“\n\n\n\n10 – 10.30am Juan Cruz Ripoll: “The lost science: the curious cases of the ADHD and leer.es protocols“\n\n\n\n10.30 – 11am Albert Reverter: “From Myth to Fact: Hemispheres\, Brain Gym and Learning Styles“\n\n\n\n11 – 11.20am Break\n\n\n\n11.20 – 11.50am Marta Ferrero: “Education misconceptions among teaching staff: prevalence\, causes and solutions“\n\n\n\n11.50am – 12.20pm Gregorio Luri: “In favour of objective school assessment“\n\n\n\n12.20 – 1pm Closing Discussion

SUMMARY:New Strategies to Combat ‘Superbugs’
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAntibiotic resistance is one of the biggest threats to global health in the next few years\, according to the World Health Organization. Bacteria suffer genetic mutations which make them resistant to antibiotics\, and this leaves us powerless in the battle against them. It is becoming increasingly difficult to treat pneumonia and tuberculosis\, for example. New antibiotics are being researched constantly\, but this won’t be enough. Scientists are looking for new strategies to face the threat of multi-resistant bacteria. \n\n\n\nItziar Alkorta\, Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the UPV/EHU\, will be talking about these new strategies at a talk called “New Strategies to Combat ‘Superbugs’”. The talk will be in Basque and will take place on 7 March at the Azkuna Zentroa in Bilbao. \n\n\n\nThis event is part of Zientziateka\, a monthly series of conferences organised by the Chair of Scientific Culture of the University of the Basque Country and Azkuna Zentroa to raise awareness of current scientific matters. \n\n\n\nTickets should be collected from the Azkuna Zentroa Information Point. SUMMARY:An evolutionary explanation of love and the challenges of epigenetics\, on Darwin Day 2017 in Bilbao
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn 13 February Bidebarrieta Library is hosting the 11th Darwin Day\, a day that commemorates the anniversary of the birth of the author of the Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection. This event\, which will start at 7pm\, includes two talks by the Dean of the UNED’s Faculty of Philosophy\, Jesús Zamora Bonilla\, and Professor of Genetics at the UPV/EHU Ana Aguirre. \n\n\n\nAfter these talks there will be a discussion in which the audience will be able to take part. Admission is free but attendees need to pick up an invite at the library. \n\n\n\nZamora will talk about “The survival of the loveliest: the Darwinian view of love” and the different types of reproduction that exist in nature\, and about the appearance of emotional bonds like love and friendship in humans. He will also give an explanation\, from the point of view of evolution\, of the psychological phenomenon of falling in love\, and sex as a biological phenomenon. \n\n\n\nAguirre will give a talk called “One thousand and one sides of epigenetics”. She will explain how\, after determining the genome sequences of a good number of species\, science is working hard to discover how these genomes work. For example\, epigenetic changes are being researched. These are an essential mechanism to ensure the correct functioning of organisms and enable them to adapt to the environment. In the field of human health\, it has been discovered that epigenetics play a key role in processes such as ageing and cancer. \n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\nJesús Zamora Bonilla is Professor of Logic and Science Philosophy\, and is currently the Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy of the National Distance Education University (UNED). His research has been focused mainly on the problem of rationality in science\, especially from the point of view of the rationality of scientists seen as social agents. He also has wide experience in scientific dissemination. \n\n\n\nAna Aguirre is Professor of Genetics in the Department of Genetics\, Physical Anthropology and Animal Physiology of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). She has taken part in research into the genetic characterisation of human groups\, the detection of genotoxic products and the identification of genetic factors in Huntington’s disease\, amongst other fields. She has also worked to disseminate the breakthroughs achieved in the field of genetics. \n\n\n\nDarwin Day\n\n\n\nDarwin Day has been celebrated in Bilbao since 2007. Leading figures from science and dissemination\, such as Francisco J. Ayala\, Pilar Carbonero\, Juan Luis Arsuaga and Manuel Toharia\, among others\, have participated in it\, turning this event into a must for fans of science and culture in general in Bizkaia’s capital. \n\n\n\nThis event is organised by the Chair of Scientific Culture of the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU\, the Círculo Escéptico and Bilbao City Council. El Correo newspaper\, CIC bioGUNE\, Bizkaia Biophysics Foundation and the Aula Espazio Gela of the UPV/EHU are backing the event.

SUMMARY:Early users? Browsing the Internet from the age of 7
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow do children and young people use the Internet? At what age do they start browsing? What type of risks are they exposed to? Research led by the UPV/EHU has analysed the way in which Spanish children between the ages of 9 and 16 use the Internet. The conclusions of this report show\, for example\, that children start accessing the network at the average age of 7\, that 12% of those surveyed have suffered some kind of harassment through the Internet or mobile phone and that 63% of them have a smartphone. \n\n\n\nMaialen Garmendia\, professor and researcher at the UPV/EHU is one of the authors of the report and will explain the general lines of the research in the talk and discussion: “Early users? Browsing the Internet from the age of 7”. The talk will take place on 7 February at Azkuna Zentroa in Bilbao. It will be in Basque and is part of the Zientziateka programme. \n\n\n\nZientziateka is a bimonthly initiative organised by the Chair of Scientific Culture of the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU and Azkuna Zentroa to raise awareness of current scientific matters. \n\n\n\nTickets should be collected from the Azkuna Zentroa Information Point. SUMMARY:The amazing learning capacity of machines
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe have been investigating how to create intelligent machines for many years. Researchers in the 1950s and 60s wanted to program machines by hand\, coding the knowledge of human beings and enabling them to have logical reasoning abilities. During that time they observed that machines’ intelligence was very rigid and was far from being as flexible as human intelligence\, and this flexibility is what our world requires. This is not where the current artificial intelligence revolution comes from. In the end we have understood that machines have to learn by themselves in order for their intelligence to be comparable to ours. In this talk we will find out how machines learn and what they are already able to do. \n\n\n\nGorka Azkune\, researcher at the University of Deusto\, will be giving a talk on this topic: “The amazing learning capacity of machines”. The talk will take place on 17 January at Azkuna Zentroa in Bilbao. It will be in Basque and is part of the Zientziateka programme. \n\n\n\nZientziateka is a monthly initiative organised by the Chair of Scientific Culture of the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU and Azkuna Zentroa to raise awareness of current scientific matters. \n\n\n\nTickets should be collected from the Azkuna Zentroa Information Point. Entry is free.

SUMMARY:Achucarro Seminars: A conserved role for Mlc1 in regulating the surface localization of Glialcam from fish to humans
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nResearcher: Alejandro Barrallo (University of Barcelona) \n\n\n\nAbstract: Megalencephalic leukoencephalopathy with subcortical cysts (MLC) is a leukodystrophy characterized by myelin vacuolization and caused by mutations in MLC1 or GLIALCAM. Patients with recessive mutations in either MLC1 or GLIALCAM show the same clinical phenotype. It has been shown that GLIALCAM is necessary for the correct targeting of MLC1 to the membrane at cell junctions\, but its own localization was independent of MLC1 in vitro. However\, recent studies in Mlc1 ko mice have shown that GlialCAM is mislocalized in glial cells. In order to investigate whether the relationship between Mlc1 and GlialCAM is species-specific\, we first identified MLC-related genes in zebrafish and generated an mlc1 ko zebrafish. We have characterized mlc1 ko zebrafish both functionally and histologically and compared the phenotype with that of the Mlc1 ko mice. In mlc1 ko zebrafish\, as in Mlc1 ko mice\, Glialcam is mislocalized. Re-examination of a brain biopsy from an MLC patient indicates that GLIALCAM is also mislocalized in Bergmann glia in the cerebellum. In vitro\, impaired localization of GlialCAM was observed in astrocyte cultures from Mlc1 ko mouse only in the presence of elevated potassium levels\, which mimics neuronal activity. In summary\, here we demonstrate an evolutionary conserved role for MLC1 in regulating glial surface levels of GLIALCAM\, and this interrelationship explains why patients with mutations in either gene (MLC1 or GLIALCAM) share the same clinical phenotype.

SUMMARY:Rediscovering Basque primitive art: new findings\, new research
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe systematic prospecting developed by archaeologists and speleologists alike has grown during the past decade\, multiplying findings of Palaeolithic parietal art in different areas of the Basque Country. The Atxurra (Berriatua) and Armintxe (Lekeitio) caves contain archaeological sites that have become two great “sanctuaries” of cave art. The recent finding and the study of these samples has provided a new vision regarding the first signs of art created by humans in our area. \n\n\n\nThe archaeological technician of the Bizkaia Archaeological Museum\, Diego Gárate shall explain the relevance of these findings at the conference titled “Rediscovering Basque primitive art: new findings\, new research.” \n\n\n\nThe session will take place on 20 December at Azkuna Zentroa (Bilbao) within the Zientziateka conference cycle that is organised every month by the Chair of Scientific Culture of the UPV/EHU with the purpose of raising awareness on current scientific matters. \n\n\n\nTickets should be collected from the Azkuna Zentroa Information Point. SUMMARY:Cannabinoids: New Research and Therapeutic Options
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEndocannabinoid systems play a role in several physiological and pathological processes within our bodies. The natural cannabinoids in plants\, as well as synthetic cannabinoids\, are able to improve this endogenous system. In recent years\, a great deal of research has been done on this subject so as to better understand the way in which the endocannabinoid system works in human beings. A recently published report demonstrated that the endocannabinoid system may play a role in high-performance processes such as memory\, as well as others. All of these findings are opening the doors to new options in terms of designing proper cannabinoid-based treatments\, which in turn makes them a therapeutic target of great interest. \n\n\n\nLeire Reguero Acebal\, professor of the School of Medicine and Nursing at the UPV/EHU\, will be discussing the latest research published on the cannabinoid system\, as well as explaining the options offered by cannabinoids in the treatment of diseases\, during a talk & discussion titled “Cannabinoids: New Research and Therapeutic Options“. This activity is part of the Zientziateka programme and will take place on 13 December at Azkuna Zentroa in Bilbao. DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDoes the socioeconomic status of a place affect the health of the people living there? For many years it has been thought that people in the Basque Country are healthier than those living in other regions in Spain. Research carried out recently concluded that there are also significant differences within our region. The study also proves that the mortality rate in the Basque Country varies substantially from one place to another\, and it is affected amongst other reasons by the socioeconomic status of each area. \n\n\n\nImanol Montoya Arroniz\, Doctor of Statistics from the UPV/EHU\, will cover these issues at a talk & discussion entitled “Does social inequality kill in the Basque Country? DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIs it possible to manipulate athletes’ genomes to improve their performance? What are the consequences? How is it carried out? The World Anti-Doping Agency has confirmed that genetic doping already exists and has become the greatest threat to sport. The first tests to detect this type of doping took place at the Rio 2016 Olympics. The effects of this doping on athletes’ health are still unknown. \n\n\n\nBiotechnologist and researcher in the field of genetic doping Julen Díaz will cover these issues at the talk & discussion entitled “Genetic doping: Designing gold medals in the lab”. Julen is currently working on the development of a method to detect this type of doping. The event will take place on 4th October in Azkuna Zentroa\, and the lecture will be in Basque. SUMMARY:A New Kilogram in 2018: The Biggest Revolution in Metrology since the French Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe 1985 Nobel Prize Winner for Physics\, Klaus von Klitzing\, will give the talk entitled A New Kilogram in 2018: The Biggest Revolution in Metrology since the French Revolution at 19:00pm in Bizkaia Aretoa (Bilbao) on 28th September\, within the framework of Passion For Knowledge 2016. Having obtained his doctorate from Braunschweig University in 1972\, von Klitzing has built up a fruitful career in the world of science\, working for Oxford University\, the Grenoble High Magnetic Field Laboratory and the IBM Research Laboratory in Yorktown Heights. In 1985\, von Klitzing was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics thanks to the discovery of the quantum Hall effect\, enabling the development of nano-electronic devices. \n\n\n\nThe talk will explain that Metrology- the science of measurements- is responsible for the international uniformity and precision in standards. Today\, the seven units for meter\, kilogram\, second\, ampere\, kelvin\, mole\, and candela of our international system of units (SI units) are used as a basis to express everything in nature by numbers and units. The first global system of units was introduced during the French Revolution with prototypes for the meter and kilogram. Even today\, an artefact of platinum iridium is by definition the international unit of mass but this standard is not stable enough. Therefore\, the General Conference on Weights and Measures at his last meeting in November 2014 encouraged the international metrology community to complete all work until July 2017 necessary for a replacement of the current SI by a new system based on constants of nature. The quantum Hall effect (Nobel Prize 1985) plays a crucial role in this development\, not only for the electrical units but also for the kilogram.

DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat research processes are required of drug manufacturers before authorising them to market their products? What is the role of national and international regulatory agencies? Medical practice has changed substantially thanks to advances in the treatment of disease\, but we should not forget that drugs also have a potential adverse or undesired effect that must be controlled. This is a particularly important aspect\, as the appearance of new drugs has increased and diversified significantly in recent decades. \n\n\n\nNurse Amaia Martínez Galarza will discuss these issues in a talk under the title of ‘Research with drugs on human beings: from the laboratory to the pharmacy’\, which will take place on 25 May at Azkuna Zentroa. This conference\, which is part of the Zientziateka programme\, will be in Spanish. Tickets are free.

SUMMARY:The evolution of celiac disease: on the trail of junk DNA
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCeliac disease is an immune disease that develops as gluten protein intolerance\, which is found in wheat and other cereal grains. Despite the fact that we now know the main gene responsible for this disease\, the genome has approximately 40 regions related to this disease\, many of them in the so-called junk DNA. The research developed by UPV/EHU has discovered a new gene within the junk DNA controlling swelling and inflammation\, which is modified in people with celiac disease. The paper\, which was published in Science\, has had a great repercussion since it has highlighted the importance of junk DNA in the development of diseases. \n\n\n\nThe research director\, Ainara Castellanos\, UPV/EHU researcher\, will address this matter in the talk entitled “The evolution of celiac disease: on the trail of junk DNA” (‘Gaixotasun zeliakoaren eragileen bila: DNA zaborraren pistaren atzetik’). The event will take place on 10 May in Azkuna Zentroa\, and the lecture will be in Basque. SUMMARY:Detecting gravitational waves: A new astronomy is born
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n11 February saw the beginning of a new era in the history of astronomy – the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) announced the first ever direct detection of gravitational waves. These waves are ripples in the fabric of spacetime caused by accelerated massive objects. Albert Einstein predicted their existence a century ago and we had indirect proof\, but they had not actually been detected until now. What is this phenomenon all about? Why is its discovery so important\, and what are the implications for physics and astronomy? \n\n\n\nPhysicists José Juan Blanco-Pillado\, Jon Urrestilla and Raül Vera\, professors at the Theoretical Physics and Science History Department of the UPV/EHU\, will be answering these questions at a talk and debate entitled “La detección de ondas gravitacionales: el nacimiento de una nueva astronomía” (“Detecting gravitational waves: A new astronomy is born”) on 27 April at Azkuna Zentroa. This conference\, which is part of the Zientziateka programme\, will be in Spanish. SUMMARY:Zika virus: The penultimate threat?
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSeveral diseases have spread all over the globe in recent years. Ebola\, MERS\, SAR and various strains of bird flu\, for example\, have crossed their usual geographical borders and have spread to other countries. Over the last few months\, everyone has been talking about a virus that was previously unknown to us: Zika. What are its features? Does it pose a threat to us? How are these diseases becoming globalised? \n\n\n\nMiren Basaras\, Professor of Microbiology at the UPV/EHU\, will be covering this topic at a talk entitled: “Zika birusa: azkenaurreko mehatxua?” (“Zika virus: The penultimate threat?”) The event will take place on 12 April in Azkuna Zentroa\, and the lecture will be in Basque. SUMMARY:Planet X: finding the Solar System’s invisible tenant
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe possible existence of an unknown planet in the limits of the solar system was announced in January. This announcement was based on theoretic calculations of the effect of a possible planet on the orbits of a series of smaller celestial bodies. This hypothetical planet is hard to find and hasn’t been observed yet\, but it poses a series of interesting questions: What is this hypothetical planet like? What is the scientific basis for this announcement? Planet X represents the unknown in the Solar System\, which continues to amaze us. \n\n\n\n Physicist Ricardo Hueso\, member of the Planet Sciences group of the UPV/EHU\, shall host a talk under the title ‘Planeta X\, en busca del inquilino invisible del sistema solar’ (‘Planet X: finding the Solar System’s invisible tenant’) March 16th at Azkuna Zentroa. This conference\, which is part of the Zientziateka programme\, will be in Spanish. \n\n\n\nZientziateka is a monthly initiative organised by the Chair of Scientific Culture of the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU and Azkuna Zentroa to raise awareness of current scientific matters. \n\n\n\nTickets should be collected from the Azkuna Zentroa Information Point from 1 February. SUMMARY:À la carte genetic modifications\, the drug of the future?
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIs it possible to modify genes as we wish? Some of the most important news from 2015 is the CRISPR technique\, which allows to rewrite the DNA sequence of a gene\, for example. Thanks to the possibilities created by this technology\, we can change or deactivate the expression of a gene and solve its problems. Could this be the final genetic tool or is it a new technique that doesn’t comply with what’s established? \n\n\n\nKoldo García\, computational biologist and researcher at UPV/EHU and Biocruces\, will host a talk on this matter under the title ‘Geneak nahieran aldatzea\, etorkizuneko botika?’ (À la carte genetic modifications\, the drug of the future?) The event will take place on 9 March in Azkuna Zentroa\, and the lecture will be in Basque. SUMMARY:The challenges of anthropology and the origin of art\, on the 2016 Bilbao Darwin Day
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn 12th February\, the birth of Charles Darwin\, the author of the theory of evolution by natural selection\, will be commemorated in Bilbao. The Bidebarrieta library will hold conferences by Carmen Manzano\, professor of Anthropology of the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU\, and Diego Gárate\, archaeologist of the Bizkaia Archaeological Museum. A questions and answers session will take place after the conferences\, where the attendees may ask the speakers. Access to the event is free and will begin at 19 hours. \n\n\n\nManzano will offer a conference under the title “The Homo genus: what we know and what we think we know”\, which will analyse the main questions anthropology must answer in years to come: What was the species prior to the Homo genus like? When did the main attributes of the Homo sapiens\, such as bipedalism or brain growth appear? \n\n\n\nMeanwhile\, Gárate’s conference is titled “The first artists: tracing the origins of symbolic expression”. He will address the human ability to create for aesthetic purposes and to share ideas: when it began to develop\, if the Homo sapiens shares it with other species or not\, and how and when the first art expressions began… The scientist will expound on the small revolution that has taken place in research on the origin of art in the past years. \n\n\n\nSpeakers \n\n\n\nCarmen Manzano is an anthropology professor and researcher. She has participated in over 40 research projects that have resulted in over 30 publications in high-impact journals\, multiple appearances in conferences\, a patent and seven research contracts. \n\n\n\nDiego Gárate is an archaeological technician at the Bizkaia Archaeological Museum. His research has focused on the origin and development of Palaeolithic art in the Cantabrian region and the artistic connections between this area and the decorated caves in the Pyrenees. \n\n\n\nDarwin Day \n\n\n\nDarwin Day has been celebrated in Bilbao since 2007.

SUMMARY:I don’t want to taste that! Why do children refuse to taste new foods?
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFood neophobia is defined as the rejection of new foods. It is very frequent in children between 3 and 6 years of age. But\, from that moment onwards\, we may encounter neophobic adults if this issue isn’t solved. Different studies link this problem with an unbalanced diet. The research project developed by Edurne Maiz and her team has observed that neophobic children have lower self-esteem and higher anxiety levels. The role of their parents is essential to prevent food neophobia from becoming a true problem. \n\n\n\nEdurne Maiz\, professor of Psychology of the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU\, will offer a conference under the title: ‘I don’t want to taste that! Why do children refuse to taste new foods?’. The event will take place on 9 February in Azkuna Zentroa\, and the lecture will be in Basque.
