SUMMARY:He wins Nobel Prize for work on cell recycling
DESCRIPTION:Xehetasunak \n\n\n\n\nData eta ordua: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgoitza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAutophagy is our body’s recycling system. Through this phenomenon\, the cells “self-devour” and their breakdown is used for energy purposes and for fighting infections. At present\, if the self-devouring process is not well regulated or contains errors\, disorders such as cancer or Parkinson’s disease may appear. The Japanese scientist Yoshinori Ohsumi and his team were recently awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 2016 due to their discoveries on this matter. \n\n\n\nAintzane Apraiz\, professor of Biology at UPV/EHU\, shall explain the significance of this phenomenon during the talk and discussion “He wins Nobel Prize for work on cell recycling”. This activity is part of the Zientziateka programme and will take place on 8 November at Azkuna Zentroa in Bilbao. The lecture will be in Basque. \n\n\n\nZientziateka is a monthly initiative organised by the Chair of Scientific Culture of the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU and Azkuna Zentroa to raise awareness of current scientific matters. \n\n\n\nTickets should be collected from the Azkuna Zentroa Information Point. Entry is free.
